Job description

Description:

The Transit Bus Mechanic Apprentice participates in a structured training program designed to develop the skills necessary to become a Journey-level Transit Bus Technician. Apprentices receive a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction while working under the supervision of certified technicians.


The program prepares apprentices to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair transit buses and related systems, including diesel, electric, hybrid, and alternative fuel propulsion systems, electrical systems, brake systems, HVAC systems, and vehicle body components.


Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, employees may advance to Transit Bus Technician / Journey-Level Mechanic positions.


The apprenticeship program includes is structured to include:

  • 5,350 hours of On-the-Job Training (OJT)
  • 650 hours of Related Instruction
  • Total Program Hours: 6,000

Apprentices will be evaluated every six (6) months on their progression within the program. 

Requirements:

Candid 


Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Licenses and Certifications
During the course of the program, apprentices will be required to obtain:

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Diesel mechanic certification or associate degree
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications

  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Desire to learn basic computer and diagnostic tool use
  • Problem solving and critical thinking
  • Ability to read or desire to learn to read schematics and technical manuals
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Work as part of a team

  • Follow instructions and safety procedures
     

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Lift and move heavy mechanical components
  • Stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces
  • Operate tools and mechanical equipment
  • Work in maintenance shop environments around noise, fumes, and moving equipment.
