Director of Import Compliance - Licensed Customs Broker - CHICAGO

Chicago, IL Area

Edward J Zarach & Associates, Inc., dba Zarach Logistics located in Bensenville, Illinois near Chicago, O’Hare airport is hiring to fill a full-time position as a License Customs Broker. We are looking for a talented and driven Licensed Customs Broker who is highly experienced in the transportation and logistics industry, specifically within a Customs Brokerage firm. This individual will play a critical role in launching and leading our Customs Brokerage Department, taking full ownership of compliance, client service, and operational execution. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader, detail-oriented, and a team player who is passionate about building efficient, compliant customs processes from the ground up and not afraid to get into the weeds with entries. Key Responsibilities and Competencies:

  • Manage the customs brokerage department, including processes, systems, and compliance standards.
  • Oversee all import documentation and ensure full compliance with CBP and other regulatory agencies.
  • File accurate entries, classify goods using HTS codes
  • Serve as the main point of contact for customs-related inquiries and provide consultative guidance on trade compliance and duty strategies.
  • Assist with hiring, training, and mentoring customs staff
  • Provide training and updates to the sales teams on compliance requirements, documentation needs, and tariff classifications to strengthen client relationships and service offering, including writing our internal monthly newsletter.
  • Monitor performance, track KPIs, and stay current on trade laws and regulations to improve processes and reduce risk.

Client Relationship Management:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact as necessary clients to ensure satisfaction and proactive service delivery related to customs duty and import compliance
  • Provide support and guidance to clients (internal and external) regarding customs regulations, processes, and classifications

Sales & Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with the Sales team to promote Zarach Logistics’ services to existing and potential clients.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to support client onboarding and retention efforts.
  • Develop a client base focused on providing customs brokerage services.

Reporting & Compliance:

  • Maintain organized and accurate records.
  • Generate reports for internal tracking of filings, refunds, and pending claims.
  • Support internal and external audits as needed.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Operations and the leadership team.

Skills and Educational Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered.

Experience:

  • Must hold a valid U.S. Customs Broker License.
  • 5+ years in a customs brokerage position, 2 + years in a leadership or managerial role preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S import/export regulations, HTS classification, tariff codes, and international trade compliance.
  • Certified CargoWise Specialist


Skills:

  • Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build relationships with clients, government agencies and internal stakeholders.
  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with customs compliance software
