What is library science?

Library science is the field that deals with the organization, management, and dissemination of information resources within libraries and similar institutions. Professionals in library science are responsible for cataloging books and media, helping patrons locate information, and preserving collections. They may also work with digital resources, data management, and information literacy. The field combines elements of information technology, archival science, and customer service to support education and research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a library science professional?

To thrive in Library Science, you need a solid grounding in information organization, research, and cataloging, typically supported by a master's degree in library science (MLS or MLIS). Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), digital archives, and metadata standards like MARC or Dublin Core is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, customer service orientation, and adaptability help professionals assist diverse patrons and manage changing information needs. These skills are crucial for efficiently organizing resources, facilitating information access, and supporting lifelong learning in a rapidly evolving field.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in library science, and how can they be addressed?

Library science professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly evolving technology, managing diverse patron needs, and navigating budget constraints. Staying current with digital resources and library management systems is essential, as is developing strong communication skills to serve a wide range of users. Proactively engaging in professional development, collaborating with colleagues, and seeking innovative ways to deliver services can help address these challenges while enhancing the value libraries provide to their communities.

We are guided by the following principles: Customer Obsession.; Excellence is the Standard.; Bias for Action.; Act Boldly.; Deliver Results.; Hire and Develop the Best.; Be Curious and Learn.; Win as a Team

Job Summary
Ā

Moultrie is looking for a DataĀ ScientistĀ to join the growing Data and Analytics Team. This team ownsĀ theĀ development of insightsĀ from extractionĀ that power decision-making across Moultrie. This role will build the predictive and prescriptive modeling capabilities that sit on top of the foundational data layer to surface actionable insights and recommendations within BI products and downstream systems. You will own the statistical modeling and feature engineering that exists in the Data Ā

  • Data Layer & Feature Store: SnowflakeĀ

  • Model Deployment: Snowflake ML Functions, SnowparkĀ

  • Development: Python, SQLĀ

  • Feature store: SnowflakeĀ

  • Experiment Tracking: MLflowĀ

Typical work includes building and maintainingĀ feature stores Snowflake/dbt, training and validating predictive models against curated datasets, and delivering model outputs as attributes made available in datasetsĀ ready for downstream tools. Ā

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with applied predictive modeling in a business context (churn prediction, customer health scores, propensity scoring) and can contribute to the data work required to support it. This role will work closely with the other members of the Data and Analytics team as well as business stakeholders to align work with highest business impact.

Job Responsibilities

Predictive and Prescriptive ModelingĀ

  • Design, build, andĀ maintainĀ predictive models that address defined business questions (customer churn,Ā subscription health, purchase propensity) using data from the foundational layer in Snowflake.Ā  Ā

  • Deliver model outputsĀ as attributes that can integrate cleanly into downstream BI products (Tableau,Ā Streamlit) and activation platforms (BlueConic, Braze,Ā TripleWhale).Ā

  • Work with business stakeholders to translate ambiguous questions into scoped modeling problems with defined success metrics. Ā

  • Communicate model outputs and their business implications clearly to non-technical audiences. Ā

  • Track, document, and monitor experiments and deployed modelsĀ to ensureĀ outputs are reliable, understandable, and reproduceable. Ā

Feature Store and Data EngineeringĀ Ā

  • Contribute to the build and maintenance of features in the feature store: defining features, documenting refresh cadence,Ā and ensuring feature pipelines are reliable and tested. Ā

  • Build andĀ maintainĀ training datasetsĀ with clear documentation of assumptions, evaluation windows, and limitations. Ā

  • Work with data engineers to ensure data models are structured to support feature engineering and model training. Ā

  • Ability to apply data engineering fundamentals (SQL modelling, versional control, documentation) to contribute to the feature store and buildĀ statistical models that integrate into the existing foundational tech stack.Ā

Job Requirements

Skills and QualificationsĀ

  • 4+ yearsĀ of hands-on experience in data science or a role with significant applied modelling. Ā

  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying predictive models in a business context. Ā

  • Strong PythonĀ proficiency:Ā Proven experience usingĀ libraries (scikit-learn, pandas) to build andĀ maintainĀ predictive models. Ā

  • Experience with classification and regression techniques and the ability toĀ validateĀ model performance usingĀ appropriate metricsĀ (precision, recall, AUC, etc.).Ā

  • SQLĀ proficiency:Ā Able to write clean, maintainable codeĀ for supporting modelsĀ in SnowflakeĀ with support from data engineers. Ā

  • Experience with Git and standard software development practices: version control, code reviews, branching, and CI/CD basics. Ā

  • Ability toĀ takeĀ an ambiguous business problem and work backwards to produce models that support effective solutions by creating a list of requirements andĀ working through sprints to deliver.Ā

  • Strong documentation practices: able to produce andĀ maintainĀ model definitions, lineage documentation, and data dictionaries that enable other developers and business stakeholders. Ā

  • Collaborative working style: comfortable operating at the boundary between data engineering,Ā data science, and business teams. Ā

Preferred QualificationsĀ

  • Experience in retail, CPG, or consumer hardware. Ā

  • Hands-on experience with a feature store platform. Ā

  • Experience withĀ MLflowĀ or a comparable experiment tracking tool. Ā

  • Familiarity with Snowpark or Snowflake ML Functions. Ā

  • Experience delivery model outputs that can be used in BI tools and other downstream platforms. Ā
