Job description

Library Clerk

Classification: Non-Exempt

Department: Library

Supervisor: Supervising Librarian

Effective: 05/19/2025

The library employees both FT (40hrs/week) and PT (30hrs/week) clerks. These individuals work in different library areas and are expected to have a basic knowledge of the tasks and procedures performed in these areas. Individuals may have day and/or evening/weekend shifts. Individual may serve as lead clerks or team leaders in their assigned areas. The individual is responsible for assisting patrons of the City's Library in accessing and obtaining information and library materials. Position requires daily contact with the public. Individual in position must have a sincere desire to help patrons meet their needs. The individual may be required to work on a shift, early mornings, evenings and weekends. Performs other duties as delegated or assigned by Supervisor or Designee.

Qualifications

II. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: โ€ข High school graduate/GED or equivalent in experience is required. โ€ข Some experience/expertise in library functions and activities is expected and preferred. โ€ข Bilingual preferred but not required. III. EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: โ€ข Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate, or failure to report information will cause the applicant's rejection from consideration for employment. โ€ข Applicant must pass a drug, physical, and pre-placement screening administered by the City of Mission's third-party drug testing facility at the City's expense. โ€ข Applicant must have a current valid class "C" driver license from the department of Public Safety with no more than two (2) moving traffic violations within the past two (2) years. IV. SKILL ABILITY REQUIREMENT: โ€ข General and some specialized knowledge of library procedures. โ€ข Perform the job with special attention to good public relations, safety, courtesy, and professionalism. โ€ข Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, supervisor, and co-workers. โ€ข Utilize good organization, communication, and customer service skills. โ€ข Ability to perform a wide variety of different types of tasks without the variety itself causing a loss of efficiency. โ€ข Utilize excellent phone skills to communicate effectively. โ€ข Work independently and be self-directed. โ€ข Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing. โ€ข Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish a plus. V. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: โ€ข Assist patrons of the City's Library in accessing and obtaining information and library materials. โ€ข Follow all Library rules, policies and procedures. โ€ข Input/check/verify/ and create bibliographic information. โ€ข Repair and process Library materials. โ€ข Shelve books and materials on a daily basis. โ€ข Set up and operate Library equipment, computers, and media/software. โ€ข Answer patron telephone calls and provide verbal assistance in reference to library materials. โ€ข Box and sort donations from patrons. โ€ข Assist patrons in unloading material donated to the Library from their vehicles. โ€ข Assist in maintaining discipline in the library and on Library grounds. โ€ข Record statistics and prepare reports. โ€ข Have a sincere desire to help patrons meet their needs. โ€ข Basic typing, filing and knowledge of office procedures. โ€ข Check books in and out of the Library. โ€ข Clean and dust Library shelves, desks, computers, walls, floors, and work areas. โ€ข Pick up books left throughout the Library. โ€ข Monitor and assist with computers. โ€ข Dust shelving, computers, and work areas. โ€ข Shift books and other Library material as required. โ€ข Cover lunches, work at other public service desks. โ€ข Participate in department and Library meetings. โ€ข Assist with closing of the Library as needed. โ€ข Perform other duties as delegated or assigned by the Supervisor. VI. NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS โ€ข Set up for events and programs inside or outside the building. โ€ข Assist with programming, special projects and preparation of displays. โ€ข Keep storage and work areas clean and organized.

VII. EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS: General office and safety equipment/materials to include but not limited to the following: โ€ข Personal Computer, Computer key board, Computer printer โ€ข Computers, Typewriter, Software Programs, Telephone โ€ข CDDVD ROM, Internet, online reference tools โ€ข Library material collections and circulating items. โ€ข Copy & Fax machine. โ€ข Pens, pencils, highlighters, 10 key calculators, Stapler, rulers โ€ข Policy & Procedure Handbook VIII. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Exposures to the following environmental conditions are required for this job. The majority of the time, the individual works indoors in a well-lighted, air-conditioned environment. Job hazards are low and include normal hazards associated with working in an office environment as well as specific hazards involved with installation, maintenance, and use of library materials, stacks, electrical (ex.: computer networks, audio/video players, 16mm projector) and mechanical (example: book trucks) equipment. IX. MANUAL DEXTERITY Both fine and gross hand manipulation are required to perform essential job functions. Gross hand manipulation is utilized to grip a series of files and reposition a keyboard to different computer stations and transport binders, books, storage boxes, chairs and boxes of paper to storage or printing areas. Fine finger dexterity is required to hand write notes, fill out forms, type reports, letters and memos, input data in computer and document information needed for day to day tasks.
