General Statement of Job
The Librarian II - Programming is responsible for planning, developing, promoting, and implementing educational events and exhibitions that foster cultural exchange, broaden perspectives, and promote lifelong curiosity across all libraries in both virtual and face-to-face settings. The Librarian II - Programming is responsible for the provision of excellent and efficient library and customer services and works to promote a positive and welcoming environment for students, colleagues, faculty, and staff.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Initiates, plans and conducts a variety of educational events, programs and activities that support the library's vision to connect to the curriculum, provide broad cultural exposure, increase awareness and use of library and archival collections and services, and provide the South Texas College community and the general public with opportunities for meaningful engagement
- Promotes programs by producing publicity releases, flyers, blog posts, social media communications, and other marketing activities with the assistance of the Engagement Specialist and the Graphic Designer.
- Negotiates presenter contracts and other agreements associated with programming events throughout the district and coordinates with library administration for budgetary support, meeting all financial and administrative deadlines.
- Provides support for the planning and development of district-wide library open house events and celebrations such as National Library Week and Preservation Week.
- Facilitates online events and workshops for students and assists with room reservations for library events using appropriate technology platforms and data reporting tools.
- Conducts research and assessment of current and future programming needs and applies the results.
- Collects, maintains, reports, and uses event data to make informed decisions for future programming needs.
- Actively seeks presenters on a regular basis during each semester and compiles an ongoing list of prospective programming activities and presenters that support the library's programming vision.
- Collaborates with other departments/outside entities to coordinate presenters and/or presentations.
- Completes and maintains required documentation such as project planning and assessment tools.
- Meets with supervisor on a regular basis to provide project and event updates.
- Serves as library liaison to assigned academic departments and participates in collection development activities.
- Provides library information literacy instruction in alignment with the Association of College and Research Libraries guidelines and standards.
- Creates and maintains research guides and related subject-specific electronic resources.
- Assists in developing and maintaining the library webpage and social media content as assigned.
- Provides assistance and training to library patrons in the utilization of the library's online resources as part of the Library Engagement Team.
- Maintains current, accurate departmental files and records and procedures manuals, and reports collection of data regularly to appropriate supervisor.
- Maintains a professional knowledge of library and information science; keeps current on developments of specific job-related fields.
- Participates in a variety of committees as assigned.
- Builds and maintains excellent public/working relationships with coworkers, students, faculty and staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Master's degree in Library Science and/or Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program required.
- At least two (2) years of demonstrated library services experience required.
- At least one (1) year of supervisory experience required.
- At least two (2) years experience with library programming strongly preferred.
- At least two (2) years experience with project management and/or event planning strongly preferred.
- Recent academic library experience, preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong background in planning and organizing projects, programs and events.
- Strong organizational skills, including project and file management.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including the coordination and oversight of district-wide projects involving groups of colleagues and other stakeholders.
- Ability to operate computers and presentation equipment commonly found in classrooms.
- Strong background in computer software, including MS Office Suite especially Excel and Outlook and knowledge of the Windows environment.
- Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
- Ability to build rapport with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
