About Our Position
DPL is hiring a Security Officer II to work at the Central Library in downtown Denver to help create positive experiences for library customers by maintaining a safe and secure environment for customers and staff. You'll receive on the job training to develop skills and abilities related to the position, including certification in First Aid, CPR and in the usage of an AED, Narcan usage, defensive tactics and verbal de-escalation training. The Denver Public Library's Security Department is a 24 hour, 7 day a week operation. This gives us the flexibility to work with people with unique scheduling needs. This position is based at the Central Library, which only has pay to park options, but regular employees are eligible for an ECO Pass. We provide uniforms and training to all of our officers to ensure they are well equipped for all situations.
What You Would Bring
  • Solid customer service background and is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment to everyone who uses the library.
  • Knowledge of safety and security in a public setting.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures, safety hazards and how to delegate to a team.
  • Ability to use workplace technology effectively including email, calendar, internet, databases, video conferencing, and other software.
  • Ability to thrive working in a diverse environment with constant public contact.
  • Ability to creatively solve problems, and handle stressful situations in a positive manner, including situations involving trauma, mental illness, substance abuse, and unhoused populations.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity and sense of humor in working with customers of all ages and backgrounds, coworkers and community.
  • Skill in de-escalation and positive communication.
  • Ability to complete concise and grammatically correct reports.
  • Ability to pass a physical and mental fitness examination and a background check after the offer to hire has been made.
  • Ability to successfully complete Narcan, Verbal De-escalation, and Defensive Tactics training.
  • Ability to obtain an unarmed security guard license issued by the City and County of Denver.
  • Experience with Trauma Informed Care or Mental Health First Aid preferred.
  • A demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for young people, including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and teens.
  • Available to work evening or weekend shifts.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Two (2) year of experience working with security and safety issues, including reporting unauthorized activity or emergencies.
Substitutions:
  • Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One year of experience working with security or loss prevention.
Additional job information:
  • License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Requires possession of an Unarmed Business Guard License issued by the City and County of Denver at the time of employment.
  • Able to obtain first aid and CPR certification by the American Red Cross within 60 days of hire
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
