Job Summary
The candidate will process, digitize and produce a finding aid, LibGuide and digital exhibition from the James E. Lewis papers. Professor Lewis cultivated Morgan's Art Department resulting in the study of art in all its forms becoming a hallmark of academic pursuit at Morgan. This James E. Lewis papers will initiate a deeper understanding visual arts had academically, socially and culturally.
Job Duties
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
  • Process the James E. Lewis papers according to Beulah M. Davis Special Collections standards utilizing series descriptions and container list headings.
  • Complete the James E. Lewis finding aid in Word and PDF for posting on the Davis Room microsite.
  • Coordinates the daily operations of the James E. Lewis digital production project, including digitization, color management, and quality control activities.
  • Designs, documents, and oversees efficient digital production workflows supporting the creation of digital objects that conform to digital library standards
  • Actively participates in the archival research about art and art instruction for African American public school children in Baltimore city between 1920 and 1950.
  • Takes part in additional departmental activities such as metadata creation and migration, digital project consulting, and outreach.
  • Evaluates requirements of digitization projects and makes recommendations for appropriate methods of capture.
  • Communicates with University Archivist about the collection's strength and possibilities for public programming of the James E. Lewis papers and the Morgan State University Department of Fine Arts.
  • Demonstrates and facilitates effective communication throughout the Library, BMDSPCD, and across the University.

Requested Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Master in Library Science (MLS) Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent by time of appointment or a Graduate Degree in the Social Sciences with experience in digitization.

  • Ability to color-calibrate monitors; experience using objective and subjective quality control assessments and performing color correction and image manipulation using standard digital imaging software
  • Familiarity with a variety of metadata standards, including MODS, METS, MIX, and VRA
