Job description

PGCMLS is seeking two (2) Public Safety Aides to help maintain a safe, welcoming, and respectful library environment, with a focus on supporting teens during busy after school hours. These positions provide a visible security presence, monitor the library and surrounding areas, and help address safety and behavior concerns in a calm and professional manner.

Essential Functions:
  1. Maintains a professional, approachable, and visible presence throughout the library.
  2. Walks through library spaces and grounds regularly to stay aware of activities and identify safety or behavior concerns.
  3. Helps create a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for customers and staff.
  4. Builds positive relationships with customers and responds to concerns in a calm, respectful, and trauma-informed manner.
  5. Provides guidance about the Library's Code of Conduct and uses verbal reminders, redirection, and de-escalation to address challenging behavior.
  6. Responds to safety concerns, incidents, and emergencies according to established procedures.
  7. Provides basic assistance to customers, such as directions to library spaces, and connects customers with the appropriate staff when additional help is needed.
  8. Keeps the Branch Manager or Person-In-Charge (PIC) informed of unusual situations, safety concerns, and significant incidents.
  9. Documents observations, actions, safety concerns, and behavior incidents clearly and accurately according to library procedures, including situations where a customer is asked to leave or law enforcement is involved.
  10. Communicates and works with emergency responders, including police, fire, and EMS, when they are called to the library.
  11. Assists with end of day procedures to help ensure the building is cleared and secure.
  12. Participates in committees, planning activities, meetings, and training.
  13. Represents and promotes the library while following applicable policies and procedures.
  14. Supports special projects and other assigned duties.

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience in public safety, security, crisis response, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with the public, preferably in a customer service or community setting.
  • Experience working with teens and youth preferred.
  • Training in conflict resolution, restorative practices, or trauma-informed practices preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, fair, and professional in challenging situations.
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive and respectful environment for all customers and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with computers, standard office software, email, and security systems.

Work Schedule:
  • Monday: 2:30 - 6pm
  • Tuesday: 2:30 - 6:30pm
  • Wednesday: 2:30 - 6:30pm
  • Thursday: 2:30 - 6pm
  • Friday: 2:30 - 6pm
