Job description

Are you passionate about books, learning, and helping others? The Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe is seeking a friendly, organized, and customer-focused Library Assistant I to support the daily operations of the JST Library. In this role, you'll provide outstanding service to library guests of all ages and backgrounds while helping maintain the library's collections, cataloging system, and welcoming environment.

  • One floating evening shift per week
What You'll Do
As the Library Assistant I, you will:
  • Welcome and assist library guests in person, by phone, and through email.
  • Check out library materials, process returned items, and register guests for library privileges.
  • Assist JST staff, Tribal community members, and guests with recreational reading, research materials, and special project resources.
  • Provide basic computer and internet instruction and guidance to library guests.
  • Help maintain the library's physical collection, including ordering books and library supplies.
  • Maintain and update the computerized catalog and circulation database.
  • Catalog and process new library materials.
  • Sort, file, retrieve, and return library materials using alphabetical, numerical, or other established filing systems.
  • Shelve returned materials and repair or arrange repairs for damaged items.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Follow all JST policies and procedures, including safety standards and the Occupational Exposure Control Plan.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of library methods and procedures.
  • Library administrative training or the ability to complete training upon hire.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and maintain attention to detail.
  • Effective time management, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and show initiative.
  • Ability to travel locally and regionally as assigned.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background investigation.

  • Familiarity with a variety of book genres.
  • Previous clerical experience.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native hiring preference applies.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Must be available to work any shift, including weekends and holidays, as job duties require.
  • Lift and carry up to 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Push up to 50 pounds using a wheeled cart.
  • Access all areas of the property as required by the position.
  • Stand, sit, walk, bend, climb, squat, twist, and reach above or below shoulder level throughout the workday.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and the ability to distinguish letters, numbers, and symbols.
