Job description

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Library Services, aids in managing the access services areas, bears full responsibility for circulation of materials internally and externally, supervises student assistants, provides reference assistance, works with faculty in meeting library needs for courses, aids in the Information Literacy across the Curriculum program, prepares reports, and recommends materials for purchase and discard. Prepares promotional displays, assists patrons in use of printed materials at Fisk and in cooperative library programs, guides patrons in use of library technology, manages the department in absence of the supervisor, and performs other services as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Ensures that library services are available during scheduled library hours including circulation services
  • Assists with library events and display preparation
  • Assists students, faculty, staff, and community users in properly using computers, software, printers, photocopiers, and other library equipment and services
  • Works regularly scheduled hours including some Saturdays and other weekend hours as needed
  • Assists and teaches students, faculty, staff, and other users how to access information using the online catalog, online databases, and print resources
  • Supervises all student workers and volunteers for Access Services ensuring a high level of customer service
  • Records daily library statistics and gate counts
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies and ordering supplies as needed
  • Responsible for signage relating to library hours and closings
  • Shelves books when needed

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Excellent computer skills, ability to conduct database searches, and ability to aid patrons' use of library technology
  • Some experience using Integrated Library Systems like Sierra, Millennium, or Alma
  • Thorough understanding of access service operations
  • Thorough understanding of Library of Congress and Dewey Classification Systems
  • Good knowledge of sources of information

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility, preferably working in a library
