Job description

Library Assistant

Chesterfield County is currently hiring for a part-time Library Assistant who shares our passion and who is willing to learn and apply the Chesterfield Public Library Way in customer interactions.

The Library Assistant provides service to the public including book check in/out, prepares material for circulation, basic clerical and computer operation. The Library Assistant will:

  • Reserve, circulate, renew and discharge books and other material.
  • Answer routine telephone or in-person inquiries.
  • Assist patrons with basic account services such as email account set up, resetting PIN numbers, printing documents, basic information request using the Internet and designated library resources, basic computer software use, technology hardware assistance with tablets, smart phones, kindles, etc.
  • Collect fines and fees for library materials and services and process according to library procedures.
  • Prepare various materials such as books, DVD's and other material for circulation.
  • Sorts and shelves various types of library materials and equipment; maintains shelves in proper order.
  • Perform other work as required.

This position is a part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in library office, library locations and other professional settings; extensive use of computers and devices required. Light to medium, occasionally heavy, physical requirements which may include, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling crouching, keyboarding, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal and reading; not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
