What is a library application?

Library applications are software programs or platforms designed to help users access, manage, and utilize library resources and services. These applications can include catalog search tools, e-book readers, library management systems, and mobile apps for borrowing or reserving materials. They streamline workflows for both library staff and patrons, making it easier to locate, borrow, and return resources while also offering features like account management, event calendars, and research assistance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a library applications specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Library Applications Specialist, you need a strong background in library science, information technology, and experience with integrated library systems (ILS), usually supported by a degree in library science or a related field. Familiarity with library management software (such as Koha, Alma, or Sierra), database management, and relevant certifications like ALA-accredited credentials are often required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with librarians and IT staff. These competencies ensure efficient library operations, seamless technology integration, and enhanced user experiences for patrons and staff.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals managing a library application system?

Professionals managing a library application system often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless integration with catalog databases, maintaining data accuracy, and providing consistent user access across devices. Balancing regular software updates and troubleshooting technical issues while minimizing downtime is also crucial. Additionally, collaboration with librarians, IT staff, and end-users is vital to address evolving needs and improve system usability.

Can you get hired at a library application with no experience?

Library application roles often require basic computer skills and customer service experience but may not always require prior experience. Entry-level positions may provide on-the-job training, making it possible to get hired without previous experience. Demonstrating a willingness to learn and relevant skills can improve chances of employment.

How do I get into library application work?

To work in library application roles, candidates typically need a relevant degree such as a library science or information technology degree, along with experience in library management systems and software. Developing skills in database management, customer service, and technical troubleshooting can improve job prospects. Certifications in library systems or IT can also be beneficial.

Job description

Diversified Services Network, Inc. (DSN) is seeking a full-time Sr. Application Security Engineer to join our team in Chicago, IL. We offer remote work, with occasional onsite work, based in Chicago, IL, full benefits, PTO, 401k, and more! If you're looking to grow your career within an extremely reputable, stable Fortune 100 company — let's talk!

Key Responsibilities

•       Define, implement, and continuously improve application security processes, standards, and workflows embedded throughout the software development lifecycle (SDLC).

•       Perform AI-assisted and traditional security assessments of applications, APIs, cloud workloads, repositories, and supporting infrastructure.

•       Manage security scanning coverage — source code analysis, secret scanning, dependency analysis, and infrastructure reviews — and triage findings by exploitability, business impact, and severity.

•       Drive remediation from discovery through verified closure, including backlog management, ownership assignment, retesting, and evidence collection.

•       Identify and reduce security debt, dependency vulnerabilities, outdated libraries, and software supply chain risk across the application portfolio.

•       Build security metrics, coverage reporting, and executive dashboards that give leadership visibility into remediation status and posture trends.

•       Leverage AI tools responsibly to accelerate security analysis, threat modeling, code review, and documentation within appropriate governance controls.

•       Perform manual validation and security testing using tools such as Burp Suite, browser developer tools, API testing platforms, and secure code review methodologies.

•       Apply OWASP Top 10, API Security Top 10, and secure coding principles across authentication, authorization, and diverse technology stacks.

•       Support remediation by developing code fixes, configuration changes, and compensating controls while minimizing production risk and business impact.

•       Partner daily with architects, developers, DevOps engineers, product owners, and business stakeholders to communicate risk, negotiate priorities, and remove blockers.

•       Maintain Agile work items (stories, tasks, defects) and participate in Scrum ceremonies — stand-ups, backlog refinement, sprint planning, and review.

•       Stay current on emerging threats, AI-related security risks, and industry best practices; coach and mentor application teams to build a security-first culture.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

•       Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) and 5–7 years of hands-on application security / DevSecOps experience.

Technical Skills:

•       Strong working understanding of Secure SDLC, DevSecOps, Agile, and Scrum methodologies.

•       Experience with security tooling: Burp Suite, GitHub Advanced Security, CodeQL, SAST, SCA, secret scanning, dependency analysis, and CI/CD security tooling.

•       Ability to read, analyze, test, and modify production application code in Java and Python to validate security findings and support remediation.

•       Knowledge of OWASP Top 10, API Security Top 10, authentication/authorization controls, and secure coding principles.

•       Familiarity with cloud security, identity and access management, and modern application architectures.

•       Experience using AI-assisted development and security tools safely and effectively.

•       Skilled in vulnerability triage and validation (exploitability, business impact, severity, compensating controls) and in building security metrics and dashboards.

Soft Skills:

•       Excellent communication, stakeholder management, presentation, and documentation skills.

•       Ability to work independently across multiple applications, teams, portfolios, and technology stacks.

•       Strong problem-solving mindset that balances security, usability, and business objectives.

•       Collaborative and influential — able to negotiate priorities and remove blockers across teams.

•       Comfortable coaching others and championing a security-first culture.
