Job description

Duties Description New York State Legislative Library The New York State Senate seeks a highly qualified and service-oriented professional to serve as part-time in person Law Librarian in the New York State Legislative Library. The Legislative Library provides comprehensive research, reference, and information services to members of the New York State Senate, the New York State Assembly, and legislative staff. The Law Librarian serves as a key research partner, providing confidential legal and legislative research assistance in support of the work of the Legislature.

This position requires a strong understanding of legal research methodologies, authoritative legal resources, and the ethical responsibilities associated with handling sensitive research requests, including maintaining confidentiality consistent with attorney-client privilege and professional standards. In this role, you will: Conduct confidential reference interviews with legislators, counsel, and legislative staff to identify research needs, clarify objectives, and develop effective research strategies. Provide comprehensive legal and legislative research using print and electronic resources, including statutes, regulations, case law, legislative history materials, government publications, and subscription legal databases.

Assist attorneys, legislative counsel, and staff in locating authoritative legal information and evaluating appropriate research sources. Perform in-depth research on legal issues, legislative matters, public policy questions, and historical legislative materials. Maintain the confidentiality of research requests and information accessed in support of legislative activities.

Provide expert guidance on legal research methodologies, database searching techniques, and effective use of library resources. Assist users in navigating legal research platforms, the library catalog, digital collections, and specialized legislative resources. Develop and maintain research guides, subject guides, pathfinders, and other tools to support independent research.

Create and deliver training sessions and instructional materials for legislators, legislative staff, interns, fellows, and other library users. Monitor developments in legal information resources, research tools, and emerging technologies to enhance library services. Participate in collection development activities, including evaluating and recommending legal and legislative resources.

Contribute to library initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications To be considered, you must have: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school Experience using legal research databases (e.g. Westlaw, Lexis, HeinOnline) Familiarity with the New York State legislative process Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail Demonstrated ability to provide effective customer service The ideal candidate will also have: Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program Additional Comments This position is Monday through Friday, with some flexibility within the hours of 9:00AM-5:00PM but will include some unpredictable evening hours during the legislative session (January-June)
