What is a librarian intern?

Librarian interns are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who work in libraries to gain practical experience in library science and information management. They assist professional librarians with tasks such as cataloging materials, helping patrons locate resources, organizing events, and supporting library operations. Internships are typically temporary and can be part of an academic program or a pathway to gaining professional skills needed for a career in librarianship.

What types of projects or tasks can a librarian intern expect to work on during their internship?

Librarian Interns typically engage in a variety of hands-on tasks, including assisting with cataloging new materials, supporting research and reference services, and helping organize community programs or events. They may also work on digital archiving projects, update library databases, and participate in collection development by evaluating resources. Interns often collaborate with experienced librarians, gaining practical exposure to both public-facing and behind-the-scenes operations, which helps build a strong foundation for a future career in library science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a librarian intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Librarian Intern, you generally need a background in library science or information studies, strong research abilities, and organizational skills, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant degree program.
