Level Design Intern information

What does a level design intern do?

A Level Design Intern assists in creating and developing game environments, maps, or levels under the guidance of experienced level designers. Their tasks often include building layouts, placing objects and obstacles, playtesting levels, and giving feedback to improve gameplay. They collaborate closely with artists, programmers, and other designers to ensure the levels are both visually appealing and engaging for players. This internship is a great opportunity to learn industry tools and workflows while contributing to actual game projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a level design intern expect during their internship?

As a Level Design Intern, you'll typically assist in creating, prototyping, and refining game levels under the guidance of senior designers. Your daily tasks may include building layouts using level editors, implementing gameplay elements, and playtesting to ensure balance and fun. You'll often collaborate closely with artists, programmers, and other designers to integrate assets and feedback into your work. This hands-on experience provides a strong foundation in industry-standard tools and workflows, and can help you build a professional portfolio for future opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a level design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Level Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of game design principles, spatial reasoning, and experience with level editors or engines, often supported by coursework or a portfolio of personal projects. Familiarity with tools like Unreal Engine, Unity, and relevant scripting languages is highly beneficial. Strong collaboration, creativity, and communication skills help you integrate feedback and work effectively within a development team. These abilities ensure the creation of engaging, well-balanced game environments that enhance player experience and support project goals.

What is the difference between Level Design Intern vs Environment Artist Intern?

AspectLevel Design InternEnvironment Artist Intern
Required SkillsLevel scripting, gameplay flow, level layoutEnvironment modeling, texturing, scene composition
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, game development studiosArt departments, visual development teams
Common Industry UsageGame design, level creationEnvironment creation, asset development

While both roles support game development, a Level Design Intern focuses on designing gameplay spaces and level flow, whereas an Environment Artist Intern specializes in creating the visual environment assets. Both positions often collaborate closely but serve different aspects of the game's development process.
