Position Summary
The Graduate Assistant - Swim Lesson Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and supporting the administration of the UIW Natatorium Swim Lesson Program. Primary responsibilities include scheduling and organizing swim lesson sessions, recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating swim instructors, ensuring high-quality instruction and exceptional customer service, maintaining participant records, and assisting with program promotion and registration. The Graduate Assistant also supports daily natatorium operations as needed, including facility oversight, risk management, and ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all participants. This position reports to the Director of Sports and Wellness.
This is a student position open to UIW graduate students.
Essential Functions
  • Coordinate the planning, scheduling, registration, and daily operations of the UIW Swim Lesson Program, including group and private swim lessons.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, schedule, and supervise swim lesson instructors to ensure high-quality instruction and adherence to program standards.
  • Monitor swim lesson instruction through regular observations and provide coaching, feedback, and continuing education opportunities to support instructor development.
  • Maintain accurate participant records, instructor certifications, attendance, and program documentation.
  • Communicate with participants and families regarding class placement, scheduling, program policies, and customer service inquiries.
  • Conduct regular evaluations of the swim lesson program and recommend improvements to enhance participant satisfaction, safety, and instructional quality.
  • Assist with marketing and promotional efforts to increase participation in swim lesson programs and community outreach initiatives.
  • Complete routine facility walkthroughs to ensure instructional areas are safe, clean, and prepared for daily programming.
  • Support natatorium operations, special events, and aquatic programming as assigned by the Director of Sports and Wellness.
  • Supervise the Natatorium during holiday and school break schedules as required by the Director of Sports and Wellness.
  • Understand and represent the mission, vision, and values of the University of the Incarnate Word and UIW Sports and Wellness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products;
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
  • Knowledge of swimming, diving, and/or synchronized swimming at the collegiate level;
  • Ability to conduct swim lessons and swim classes;
  • Ability to plan, organize and schedule staff;
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of others;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills;
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA

Work Hours
  • 20 hours per week required
  • Swim lessons are scheduled around pool schedule to include normal working hours, evenings and weekends

Physical Demands
  • Ability to swim 500 m in 20 minutes in order to pass lifeguard certification.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department.
  • This position requires manual labor with the ability to lift 50 pounds.
