What does a lender do?

A lender is an individual, financial institution, or entity that provides funds to borrowers with the expectation that the money will be repaid, typically with interest. Lenders evaluate the creditworthiness of borrowers, determine loan terms, and manage repayment schedules. They play a crucial role in personal, business, and real estate financing by offering various types of loans, such as mortgages, auto loans, and business loans. Ensuring responsible lending practices and managing risk are also key responsibilities of lenders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lender?

To thrive as a Lender, you need strong financial analysis, risk assessment, and credit evaluation skills, typically supported by a degree in finance, business, or a related field. Familiarity with loan origination systems, credit scoring software, and regulatory compliance tools is essential. Excellent communication, negotiation, and customer service skills help build trust and foster lasting client relationships. These competencies ensure responsible lending practices, minimize risk, and contribute to organizational growth and client satisfaction.

What do lenders get paid?

Lenders typically earn interest on the loans they provide, which is their primary source of income. They may also receive fees for processing or underwriting loans, and compensation can vary based on the type of loan, the lender's policies, and the borrower's creditworthiness.

How to get a job as a lender?

To become a lender, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or a related field, along with strong analytical and communication skills. Relevant experience in banking, credit analysis, or sales can improve job prospects, and obtaining certifications such as the Mortgage Loan Originator license or similar credentials may be required depending on the role. Employers often look for familiarity with financial software and regulatory compliance knowledge.

What is the difference between Lender vs Loan Officer?

AspectLenderLoan Officer
CredentialsMay require licensing, certifications, and financial backgroundTypically licensed, with knowledge of loan products and regulations
Work EnvironmentWorks for banks, credit unions, or mortgage companies, handling loan processing and approvalWorks directly with clients to gather information and recommend loan options
Employer & Industry UsageFinancial institutions, mortgage lendersMortgage brokers, banks, credit unions

While both Lenders and Loan Officers are involved in the mortgage process, Lenders primarily handle the approval and funding of loans within financial institutions. Loan Officers work directly with clients to assess their needs and guide them through the application process. Understanding these roles helps clarify the mortgage lending process and career paths in the industry.

How do lenders typically collaborate with underwriters and other team members during the loan approval process?

Lenders work closely with underwriters, loan processors, and sometimes loan officers to ensure that each loan application is thoroughly reviewed and compliant with lending guidelines. Collaboration often involves gathering and verifying documentation, discussing risk factors, and addressing any concerns that arise during the review process. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Lenders often need to clarify applicant information and coordinate with various departments to deliver timely decisions to clients. This cooperative environment helps ensure that loans are processed efficiently and in accordance with regulations.

What qualifications do you need to be a lender?

To become a lender, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, and some roles may require a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Relevant skills include financial analysis, customer service, and knowledge of lending regulations; professional certifications such as a mortgage license or loan officer license can also be required depending on the type of lending.

Who We Are...

We believe in the kind of service that comes only through a local institution, where every single person is a member — not a number. Our staff have roots here, and we care about the people we work with, both as members of our credit union, and as members of our community.

  • Evaluate loan applications, financial statements, tax reports, credit reports and other documentation to determine creditworthiness of applicants
  • Structure and negotiate loan terms, ensuring compliance with Business Loan Policy and other regulatory requirements
  • Work closely with members of the team to develop credit presentations to and present them to loan committee
  • Closely manage a portfolio of loans by monitoring loan performance and managing risk by conducting regular reviews and follow-ups
  • Stay updated on industry trends, economic conditions, and regulatory changes
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless service delivery of all products and services for our business members

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
  • Experience in a financial institution or credit program
  • Experience or training in commercial lending or the equivalent
Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven organization, prioritization, and accuracy in work
SPECIAL FACTORS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Stooping; kneeling; crouching; and reaching below, at, and over shoulder level required
  • Sitting – 80%; standing and walking - 20%
  • Hearing, visual, and verbal ability required

Sage Credit Union is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
