Job description

Position Overview

The District Office of Assemblyman Robert J. Karabinchak is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and highly organized Legislative Aide to support the Assemblyman and Chief of Staff across legislative research, policy development, communications, committee work, and district engagement.

The Legislative Aide will play an important role in researching and analyzing legislation and public policy issues, preparing briefing materials and legislative memoranda, supporting the development of legislative initiatives, coordinating public messaging, and monitoring issues affecting residents and communities throughout the 18th Legislative District.


This is a full-time, in-person position based in the Assemblyman’s district office in Edison, New Jersey. The position requires regular travel throughout the 18th Legislative District for meetings, events, community outreach, and other district activities, with approximately 20% local travel expected. Occasional evening and weekend work is also required for community meetings, events, and other district activities. A valid driver’s license and consistent access to personal transportation are required.


Key Responsibilities

Legislative Research & Policy

  • Monitor state and local government developments and identify issues affecting district residents, municipalities, businesses, and community organizations.
  • Research legislation and policy issues, identify stakeholders, and assist in developing legislative proposals and initiatives.
  • Track bills, committee activity, and other matters relevant to the Assemblyman’s priorities.
  • Prepare briefing materials, talking points, legislative memoranda, background documents, and research for hearings, testimony, meetings, and public appearances.
  • Monitor district concerns and provide the Assemblyman and Chief of Staff with relevant updates and trends.

Communications & Social Media

  • Prepare and coordinate content for the Assembly office’s social media and digital platforms.
  • Develop clear, informative, and engaging content highlighting legislative activities, district events, constituent resources, and community accomplishments.
  • Monitor digital engagement and respond to constituent inquiries and messages as appropriate.
  • Basic graphic design and digital content creation experience is preferred.

District Outreach & Constituent Services

  • Monitor issues affecting residents, businesses, municipalities, and community organizations throughout the 18th Legislative District.
  • Assist with district outreach, community engagement, town halls, meetings, and special events.
  • Provide backup support for constituent casework and inquiries as needed.
  • Represent the office professionally when interacting with constituents, elected officials, government representatives, and community organizations.

General Office Support

  • Support the Assemblyman and Chief of Staff in the effective operation of the district office.
  • Assist with meetings, events, correspondence, scheduling-related matters, and other office responsibilities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to contribute to the overall success of the office.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, public policy, communications, government, or a related field preferred.
  • At least one year of relevant professional, internship, campaign, legislative, government, nonprofit, communications, research, or related experience preferred.
  • Recent graduates with strong academic credentials and relevant internship, campus leadership, organizing, research, or public-policy experience are encouraged to apply.

  • Ability to understand complex laws and policies and explain them clearly.
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.

  • Ability to handle confidential information professionally and discreetly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism when working with constituents, elected officials, government representatives, community groups, and the public.


Residency Requirement:

  • New Jersey residency is required. Preference will be given to applicants residing within reasonable commuting distance of the district office in Edison, NJ.
