What does a legal writing instructor do?

A Legal Writing Instructor teaches law students or legal professionals how to write effectively within the context of the law. They design and deliver courses focused on legal research, analysis, citation methods, and drafting documents such as memos, briefs, and motions. Instructors also provide feedback to help students improve clarity, persuasiveness, and adherence to legal standards. Their goal is to prepare individuals for the rigorous writing demands of legal practice.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a legal writing instructor?

To thrive as a Legal Writing Instructor, you need a strong background in legal analysis, research, and writing, typically supported by a law degree (JD) and relevant teaching or legal experience. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw and LexisNexis, as well as learning management systems (LMS), is often required. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help instructors effectively guide students and foster their growth. These competencies ensure students gain practical, precise legal writing abilities essential for law practice.

How do legal writing instructors collaborate with law faculty and students?

Legal Writing Instructors work closely with both law faculty and students to develop effective legal research and writing competencies. They often coordinate with doctrinal professors to align writing assignments with substantive law topics, ensuring students gain practical experience applying legal concepts.
