Job description

About Reserv

Reserv is an insurtech creating and incubating cuttingโ€‘edge AI and automation technology to bring efficiency and simplicity to claims. Founded by insurtech veterans with deep experience in SaaS and digital claims, Reserv is ventureโ€‘backed by Bain Capital and Altai Ventures and began operations in May 2022. We are focused on automating highly manual tasks to tackle longโ€‘standing problems in claims and set a new standard for TPAs, insurance technology providers, and adjusters alike. We have ambitious (but attainable!) goals and need people who can work in an evolving environment. If building a leading TPA and the prospect of tackling the longโ€‘standing challenges of the claims role sounds exciting, we canโ€™t wait to meet you.

About the role

As Legal Counsel at Reserv, you will be an early and integral member of our growing legal function, working closely with the VP of Legal to support all aspects of the companyโ€™s legal needs. This is a unique opportunity to join a fastโ€‘moving, ventureโ€‘backed insurtech at an exciting stage of growth โ€” and to gain broad, handsโ€‘on experience across transactional, commercial, and operational legal matters.

Youโ€™ll operate as a true generalist: one day you might be reviewing a vendor agreement, the next advising the product team on data privacy considerations, and the next helping develop internal playbooks and processes. You donโ€™t need to know insurance law inside and outโ€” a willingness to learn the space combined with strong foundational legal skills is what matters most.

Who you are
  • Selfโ€‘Starter: You are organized, detailโ€‘oriented, and take ownership of your work โ€” you donโ€™t need to be told the same thing twice.
  • Clear Communicator: You can communicate clearly and concisely with both legal and nonโ€‘legal audiences, and know when to elevate versus when to move forward.
  • Businessโ€‘Minded: You have a practical, commercial sensibility โ€” you understand that legal exists to enable the business, not just protect it.
  • Eager Learner: Youโ€™re intellectually curious and eager to develop expertise in new areas, including insurance, claims, and the regulatory landscape around AI and automation.
  • Adaptable: You thrive in ambiguous, fastโ€‘paced environments and are comfortable building processes from scratch when needed.
  • Ethically Grounded: You hold yourself and others to high ethical standards and handle sensitive matters with discretion.
  • A sense of humor goes a long way around here.
What youโ€™ll do Contracts & Transactional Support
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements including vendor contracts, SaaS agreements, NDAs, and partnership agreements.
  • Support contract lifecycle management, helping build and maintain scalable templates and playbooks.
  • Collaborate crossโ€‘functionally with Sales, Operations, Product, and Finance to move deals forward efficiently.
Legal Operations
  • Help build and improve internal legal processes, templates, and workflows as the company scales.
  • Maintain organized records of contracts, corporate documents, and legal correspondence.
  • Support due diligence and data room preparation for financing rounds or other strategic transactions.
Compliance & Risk
  • Assist with regulatory and compliance matters, including those specific to the insurance and TPA industry.
  • Support the VP of Legal in tracking and interpreting relevant laws and regulations across the jurisdictions in which Reserv operates.
  • Help identify and flag potential legal risks across business units proactively.
Crossโ€‘Functional Partnership
  • Partner with Product & Engineering on legal considerations related to AI, data privacy, and new feature development.
  • Support outside counsel coordination for specialized matters such as IP, litigation, and employment.
  • Serve as a reliable, approachable resource for teammates across the company who have legal questions.
Qualifications
  • 3โ€“5 years of legal experience, with a combination of law firm and/or inโ€‘house experience.
  • Strong generalist foundation โ€” experience across commercial contracts, corporate matters, and/or regulatory compliance.
  • Prior Big Law or midโ€‘size firm experience in formative years strongly preferred.
  • Inโ€‘house experience at a startup, tech company, or highโ€‘growth business is a plus.
  • Experience in insurance, insurtech, fintech, or SaaS is a plus, but not required โ€” we will teach you what you need to know.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active admission to a state bar in the United States.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally as needed.
Benefits
  • Generous healthโ€‘insurance package with nationwide coverage, vision, and dental.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching.
  • Competitive PTO policy โ€“ we want our employees fresh, healthy, happy, and energized!
  • Generous family leave policy after 8 months of continuous work.
  • Work from anywhere to facilitate your workโ€‘life balance.
  • Apple laptop, large second monitor, and other qualityโ€‘ofโ€‘life equipment you may want. Technology is something that should make your life easier, not harder!
Additionally, we will
  • Listen to your feedback to enhance and improve upon the longโ€‘standing challenges of an adjuster and the claims role.
  • Work toward reducing and eliminating all the administrative work from an adjuster role.
  • Foster a culture of empathy, transparency, and empowerment in a remoteโ€‘first environment.

At Reserv, we value diversity in backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences and believe that diversity in viewpoints and critical thinking drives innovation, firstโ€‘principles thinking, and success. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and encourage those from all walks of life to apply. If you believe you are a good fit for this role, we would love to hear from you!
