What is a legal extern?

Legal externs are law students who work temporarily in legal environments, such as law firms, courts, government agencies, or non-profit organizations, to gain practical experience. Unlike interns, externs often receive academic credit for their work rather than pay and focus on observing and assisting with real legal cases under the supervision of licensed attorneys. The role helps students apply classroom learning to real-world legal issues and can be a valuable step toward a legal career.

What types of projects or cases does a legal extern typically work on during their placement?

Legal Externs often assist with a variety of projects, which may include conducting legal research, drafting memoranda, preparing case summaries, and supporting attorneys during client meetings or court proceedings. The specific assignments can depend on the organization, but externs generally work on real cases under the supervision of licensed attorneys. This hands-on experience helps externs develop practical legal skills and gain insight into day-to-day legal practice, while also allowing them to contribute meaningfully to the team's objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a legal extern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Legal Extern, you need a solid understanding of legal research, writing, and analysis, typically gained through current enrollment in law school. Familiarity with legal databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in Microsoft Office are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and effective communication skills set outstanding externs apart. These abilities ensure accurate, timely support for attorneys and meaningful contributions to legal casework and projects.
