Job description

About Hook
Hook is a social music platform, backed by top-tier investors, building the next generation of music discovery, fan expression, and creator growth. We turn the songs people love into sounds they can play with - enabling fans and creators to reimagine music through intuitive, remix-friendly experiences with zero learning curve. By partnering directly with artists, labels, and rightsholders, Hook ensures music is discovered, shared, and expressed in ways that respect and reward the people behind it. At Hook, music isn't just consumed - it's experienced, expressed, and made personal.
Role Overview
As a Legal Affairs Intern at Hook, you will work directly alongside the General Counsel and gain hands-on exposure to virtually every facet of an in-house legal practice. From day-to-day operational documents to complex entertainment and IP transactions, you will be immersed in the real legal affairs work of a fast-moving early-stage music and consumer tech startup. This role is ideal for a law student who wants to understand what it truly means to serve as General Counsel-not just in theory, but in practice.
You will work cross-functionally within the company, learning from and collaborating with immensely talented professionals within Hook's content, engineering, marketing, operations, and business development teams. You will have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the company and to see your ideas and work come to fruition.
This role demands excellent writing and communication skills, an eye for detail, passion for technology and the law, a self-driven ability to learn quickly and most importantly: an insatiable curiosity.
What You'll Do
Day-to-Day Legal Operations
  • Draft, review, and manage non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and confidentiality agreements
  • Prepare and process offer letters, contractor agreements, and employment-related documents
  • Assist with corporate governance and organizational housekeeping
Transactional & Commercial Work
  • Support the drafting and negotiation of service agreements, vendor contracts, and partnership deals
  • Assist with content licensing agreements, sync licenses, and content distribution deals
  • Conduct due diligence and support deal execution across a range of commercial transactions
Intellectual Property & Entertainment
  • Research and advise on copyright, trademark, and other IP matters relevant to the music and entertainment industries
  • Assist with the review and negotiation of complex IP licensing and rights agreements
  • Monitor industry developments, regulatory changes, and emerging legal issues in entertainment and digital media
General Counsel Exposure
  • Participate in cross-functional projects with business, creative, and product teams
  • Gain exposure to risk assessment, compliance, and corporate strategy at the executive level
  • Contribute to the development of internal legal templates, policies, and risk management best practices.

Qualifications & Experience
Required
  • Currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school (2L, or 3L candidates welcome) with strong academic credentials.
  • A strong understanding of music copyright law and the corresponding licenses.
  • Strong interest in entertainment law, intellectual property, music, and/or media sectors.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Comfort with social media consumption patterns.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills-comfortable collaborating across teams.
Preferred
  • Prior experience or coursework in IP, entertainment law, or music business is a plus but not required.
  • An understanding of current commercial and legal landscape within the social media, UGC, music consumption, and creator marketplaces
  • Experience working at an early-stage startup (Seed-Series B)
  • Passion for music and technology.

Compensation
This is a paid internship, with the opportunity for exceptional interns to grow into a longer-term or full-time role at Hook.
