Job description

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Parent Educator Apprentice will recruit and maintain a caseload of 15 families once the Parent Educator certification is obtained and the apprenticeship hours are complete. They will conduct home visits to provide parenting education and support aimed at improving the health of prenatal mothers and children, enhancing parent knowledge and practices related to child development, promoting early detection of developmental delays, and strengthening parent-child interactions, utilizing the Parents As Teachers model.
Requirements

  • One (1) year of related work experience required.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not include any supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Job Functions
  1. Build relationships with parents and children through personal visits and group meetings.
  2. Deliver personal visits, conduct screenings, and facilitate group connections upon completion of the Parents as Teachers training.
  3. Recruit families for participation in the program within the assigned area, to maintain a caseload of at least fifteen (15) families.
  4. Conduct two(2) personal visits per month with participating families to provide health, development and parenting information; ensuring that families receive consistent research-based information.
  5. Apprentices are required to provide no more than thirty(30) visits per month.
  6. Provide leadership in the provision of services within the community; conduct community referrals for participants/clients.
  7. Gather information on families, including conducting pre/post-test information.
  8. Participate in training and other staff development activities.
  9. Apprentice will earn Parents As Teachers certification before building caseload and serving families.
  10. Keep Program Manager abreast of child/family progress and family issues and concerns as they arise.
  11. Maintain ongoing communication; review information based upon own caseload with Program Manager and Case Manager.
  12. Participate in the planning and execution of monthly Group Connections while encouraging family participation.
  13. Complete and submit required reports, schedules, and other documentation as required in a timely manner.
  14. Maintain up-to-date records/documentation of the visits that contribute to the annual program reports.
  15. Track family health needs and Healthy Birth outcome of prenatal mothers
  16. Serve as a liaison between families and program partners.
  17. Attend all parent meetings, staff meetings, and all Mandatory TDOH meetings/training.
  18. Comply with the established policies and procedures of Porter-Leath, Parents as Teachers, and the Tennessee Department of Health agency and contribute to team effort by performing other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including good reading skills.
  • Ability to perceive and deal with sensitive issues while maintaining confidentiality and objectivity.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger/handle/feel. Occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and color vision. Work in a non-smoking environment.
Special Conditions
Maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record with appropriate level of insurance. Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid training/certification within 90 days of employment.
