Position Summary
Clinical Matrix Teams (CMTs) are asset-focused teams of functional leaders that design and deliver early- to late-stage Clinical Development Plans (CDPs). As the number and complexity of CMTs has grown, these teams need dedicated project management capacity to stay organized, disciplined, and focused on the critical path.
The Associate Director Clinical Development Project Manager provides the project management and communication-planning backbone that keeps one or more CMTs running efficiently, freeing functional leads to focus on clinical strategy rather than administrative coordination.
The role owns the full lifecycle of CMT project management assets - from charter, scope, and kickoff through governance, risk, resourcing, and reporting, to implementation, training, and closeout - and partners with CMT functional leads and the broader PPM organization to standardize how CMTs plan, govern, track progress, and report status.
The Associate Director Clinical Development Project Manager demonstrates a strong grounding in established project management methods and brings a track record of applying them within a complex, matrixed life sciences organization. With guidance from the CMT Lead and/or PPM Director, the role manages CMT project infrastructure with limited day-to-day oversight, escalating risks and issues to leadership as required.
Responsibilities
This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:
Develop and own the Project Charter and Scope Statement that define the CMT's objectives, scope, stakeholders, and success criteria, and lead the Project Kickoff Deck that aligns the team at initiation.
Build and maintain the Stakeholder Register, Communication Plan, and Meeting Cadence / Governance Calendar so the right information reaches the right people with clear, timely escalation paths.
Create and maintain the CMT plan, translating CDP milestones into a visual schedule of tasks, dependencies, and critical-path activities.
Own the RACI Matrix and Governance Framework, clarifying accountability across functional leads and defining steering committee structures and decision checkpoints for the CMT.
Maintain the Risk Log / RAID Register, Issue Log, and Dependency Tracker, proactively identifying, escalating, and driving resolution of risks, issues, and cross-functional dependencies.
Produce recurring Status Reports and the Project Dashboard (summary view), giving leadership a clear, KPI-based view of progress, risk, and milestones.
Maintain the Requirements / Deliverables Log, Decision Log, Action Item Tracker, and Milestone Tracker so that scope, decisions, and commitments stay traceable and on schedule.
Develop the Quality / Test Plan and Compliance Checklist, and maintain the Change Log, to confirm deliverables meet quality standards and adhere to regulatory and policy requirements.
Prepare the Stakeholder Communication Summary and Executive Summary Report, translating detailed project activity into concise updates for stakeholders and leadership.
Deliver the Lessons Learned / Closeout Report and Post-Implementation Review, capturing performance against objectives and recommendations to improve future CMT engagements.
Facilitate monthly governance and review meetings with project stakeholders to review deliverables and plan upcoming activities, applying consistent best practice for agendas, actions, and minutes.
Ensure rigor, consistency, and compliance in established PM systems and templates to drive timely, high-quality data and reporting across the CMT.
Build trusting relationships with functional leads and stakeholders to encourage transparency, collaboration, and effective conflict resolution.
Actively promote GSK's Code and values. Seek diverse perspectives, cultivate psychological safety, and ensure all relevant voices are heard to strengthen outcomes. Work on any assignment as directed.
Why You?
Basic Qualification
We are seeking professionals with the following required skills and qualifications to help us achieve our goals
Bachelor's degree in life sciences, nursing, pharmacy, or a related field or equivalent experience.
5+ years of project management experience in a matrix team environment, ideally within pharmaceutical/biotech R&D or clinical development.
Experience building and maintaining core PM artifacts, including charters, scope statements, WBS, RACI matrices, and RAID/risk logs.
Experience using established PM planning and reporting tools (e.g., MS Project, Planisware, Smartsheet, Excel, Power BI, or Tableau).
Experience facilitating governance and project team meetings, and preparing materials for steering committee / governance review.
Experience producing status reports, dashboards, and executive summaries for senior stakeholders.
Experience supporting resource planning, budget tracking, and financial variance reporting on complex, multi-month projects.
Preferred Qualifications
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
Master's Degree / Advanced Degree
Project/Program Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
Experience with MS Project, Planisware, Excel, and Power BI/Tableau, or other recognized PM and reporting tools, is required.
Experience operating within a remote, contractor/consulting engagement model with a monthly governance reporting cadence is a plus.
Project Management Expertise
Experience across the full PM lifecycle - from charter and initiation through governance, execution, implementation, training, and closeout / lessons learned.
Experience building and maintaining a single source-of-truth project plan with clear dependencies, milestones, and critical-path visibility.
Experience managing risk, issue, dependency, and decision logs across multiple functions and translating them into clear escalations.
Experience implementing quality/compliance checkpoints and change-control processes.
Clinical Development / Life Sciences Experience
Understanding of Clinical Development Plans (CDPs) and how Clinical Matrix Teams operate within a matrixed R&D organization.
Experience supporting cross-functional teams (clinical, regulatory, biostatistics, medical, commercial) to coordinate delivery of clinical milestones.
Experience with regulatory and compliance considerations relevant to clinical trial project management.
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills
Experience building trust and strengthening collaborative relationships with matrixed stakeholders across functions.
Strong facilitation, communication, and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to translate detailed project activity into clear, concise updates for leadership.
Experience proactively flagging risks and delays and escalating appropriately and in a timely manner.
Work arrangement
This role is offered as a hybrid working arrangement. You will combine remote work with regular on-site collaboration days.
