What is a learning accessibility designer?

A Learning Accessibility Designer is a professional who ensures that educational content, digital learning materials, and instructional experiences are accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities. They apply principles of universal design for learning (UDL) and accessibility standards, such as WCAG, to remove barriers and provide equal opportunities for engagement and success. Their work involves collaborating with educators and technologists to create inclusive learning environments, conducting accessibility audits, and recommending improvements to instructional materials and platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a learning accessibility designer?

To thrive as a Learning Accessibility Designer, you need a strong understanding of instructional design, accessibility standards (such as WCAG), and experience with inclusive educational practices, often supported by a background in education, design, or accessibility certification. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), assistive technologies, and accessibility testing tools is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively and ensure that content is accessible to all learners. These competencies are vital for creating equitable learning experiences and meeting legal and ethical accessibility requirements.

How does a learning accessibility designer typically collaborate with instructional designers and subject matter experts to ensure accessible course materials?

A Learning Accessibility Designer works closely with instructional designers and subject matter experts throughout the content development process, providing guidance and support to ensure all learning materials meet accessibility standards. This collaboration often includes conducting accessibility reviews, offering recommendations for inclusive design, and assisting in the selection of accessible tools and technologies. Regular meetings and feedback sessions help integrate accessibility best practices from the beginning, ensuring that courses are usable by all learners. This team-based approach fosters a more inclusive educational environment and helps identify and address potential barriers early in the design process.

This role goes beyond traditional instructional design and eLearning development. You'll partner with subject matter experts, business leaders, and the Learning & Development team to optimize role-specific learning experiences from end to end-identifying opportunities to simplify, modernize, and improve how associates learn and apply new skills.

You'll bring a modern learning mindset to your work, using the right approach for the learning need rather than defaulting to traditional courses. This may include eLearning, short-form videos, microlearning, job aids, practical activities, simulations, facilitated experiences, performance support, and emerging learning technologies.

We're looking for someone who is curious, creative, comfortable challenging the status quo, and excited to experiment with new ways of helping people learn. You'll stay current with learning industry trends and translate those ideas into practical, engaging, and scalable experiences for associates in multifamily roles.

Responsibilities
  • Design and optimize role-specific learning experiences that build the knowledge, skills, and confidence associates need to succeed.
  • Partner with subject matter experts, business leaders, and Learning & Development to translate business and learner needs into engaging, practical, and learner-centered solutions.
  • Leverage a modern learning ecosystem-including eLearning, short-form content, microlearning, live training, video, practice, simulations, job aids and performance support-selecting the right solutions for each need.
  • Develop digital learning experiences using tools such as Articulate 360, Synthesia, and emerging learning technologies.
  • Lead learning projects from concept through launch, managing discovery, timelines, priorities, stakeholders, deliverables, and multiple concurrent projects.
  • Facilitate learning experiences, workshops, design sessions, and stakeholder discussions with confidence.
  • Stay current on learning trends, technologies, and best practices and identify opportunities to evolve RPM's learning ecosystem.
  • Evaluate and continuously improve learning experiences using learner feedback, data, assessment results, and business needs.
  • Collaborate across Learning & Development to create scalable, connected learning experiences and serve as a resource for learning technology and LMS capabilities.
Education and Experience
  • 2+ years of experience in instructional design, learning experience design, or a related Learning & Development role. Experience designing learning solutions for a frontline audience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience developing eLearning, microlearning, performance support and digital learning solutions using tools such as Articulate 360, Synthesia and/or similar technologies. Experience developing and editing video content.
  • Ability to translate complex information into simple, engaging, and actionable learning experiences.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, stakeholders, and deadlines.
  • Comfortable facilitating learning experiences, workshops, meetings, and stakeholder discussions.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data and feedback to continuously improve learning solutions.
  • Experience with learning management systems and learning technology platforms.
  • Experience creating learning solutions using WalkMe or similar digital adoption platforms is a plus.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to build partnerships in a virtual environment.
