Job description

JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Store Team Leader is responsible to assist the Store Team Leader in overseeing daily store operations and provide overall leadership and direction to achieve profitable operation of the retail store as assigned. The Assistant helps ensure that the goals of full, fresh, clean, signed and friendly are achieved. The assistant drives and maintains a positive working environment that engages and empowers all associates. The Assistant is responsible to help develop and train the store department team leaders, the Second Assistant, and associates to continually grow their capacity for efficiency, effectiveness and service. The Assistant coordinates and directs the overall operations of the store in the absence of the Store Team Leader. The Assistant is responsible to engage in learning activities necessary to prepare for potential assignment as a Store Team Leader.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Leadership:
  • Maintain a positive work environment and ensure fair and consistent treatment of all associates. Set a positive example of the company values and excellent customer service.
  • Recruit, select, on-board, coach, and develop the best associates possible to achieve store, company, strategic and tactical goals.
  • Set clear performance expectations for associates and follow-up with timely performance evaluations and appropriate compensation.
  • Ensure succession planning and adequate bench strength is developed.

Operations:
  • Manage payroll/scheduling efficiency to optimize sales and provide an outstanding customer experience within budget requirements for the store.
  • Maintain high operational standards to include clean store conditions both inside and outside, optimum freshness of merchandise, merchandising to achieve maximum sales and profits and proper rotation of all stock.
  • Ensure all displays are built for maximum sales and profits, are visually appealing, include tie-in merchandise when applicable, and are properly signed.

  • Clearly communicate and enforce standards for quality, customer service, safety, loss prevention, sanitation, store conditions, 5S and food safety to all departments and the store.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations at store level, and ensure proper reporting is complete and accurate.
  • Observing and enforcing all company rules and policies.
  • Maintaining a neat, professional appearance at all times to set an example for others to follow; enforce company dress and grooming standards.
  • Ensure that all associates comply with company cash and check handling policies and procedures, alcohol and tobacco compliance, government program compliance, etc.

  • Control inventory levels to minimize over-stocks, under-stocks, and out-of-stocks within the policy guidelines and targets set for the store to maximize sales, inventory turns, cash flow, and return-on-investment.
  • Ensure that all merchandise is properly priced in accordance with the pricing guidelines.
  • Ensuring that product rotation procedures are rigidly observed, and that merchandise and merchandising is of optimum freshness and quality to achieve maximum sales and profits

  • Maintain current knowledge of market conditions and competitive activity through periodic review of competition.
  • Manage quarterly sales, income, expense, capital and labor budgets for the store.
  • Monitor and control expenses to be in line with budgets.

  • Interface with manufacturers' and sales representatives; evaluate vendor promotions in accordance with company policy to select and purchase those products that provide savings benefits with a goal of increasing sales, inventory turnover and customer traffic in the store.

Safety:
  • Maintain building, fixtures, storage facilities, and equipment in optimal operational condition, monitor maintenance and repairs and manage expenses of same.
  • Promote a safe and accident free work and shopping environment.
  • Ensure proper protective equipment is available and used while setting an example of safe work practices.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS:
Education/Experience
  • Minimum educational requirement is a high school education or equivalent, a college background preferred
    • Minimum of 3 years of successful combined retail experience in various areas of store management, including department team leader, customer service and assistant store team leader.
    • Minimum 1 year of experience as a second assistant store team leader
  • Experience in handling personnel relations or human resource management; some academic exposure or background in this area preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Math skills necessary to supervise and handle sales transactions, tender change, verify vendor invoice charges and counts, calculate gross margins, percentages and ad losses, create operating budgets, make financial forecasts and projections, calculate productivity yardsticks such as earned hours and sales per manhour, evaluate inventory reports to implement corrective measures if required, and analyze receiving logs
  • Ability to read and understand income statements and have the necessary accounting skills and experience to be able to balance cash receipts or vault cash counts, readily detect errors and omissions, and troubleshoot -errors or discrepancies in cash or column balances
  • Exemplifies the desired culture, values and philosophies of the organization (high ethics, integrity, trust, respect, loyalty and humility)
  • Ability to hear, speak and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance, to answer telephones, and to be able to communicate effectively with others
  • Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English and Spanish languages with sufficient proficiency in order to read and understand instructions for operating electronic cash registers and other equipment; company handbooks, policies and procedures; and other written job-related documents including postings on company bulletin boards
  • Ability to plan, prioritize tasks, manage time effectively and follow-through
  • Ability to compose and write reports, procedure manuals, effective departmental memos, employee corrective action notices, and other business correspondence.
  • Ability to perform all of the duties of, and meet the requirements & conditions for, both an experienced grocery clerk and an experienced produce clerk
  • Ability to effectively cope with change, and help lead company change initiatives at store level
  • Ability to help recruit, hire, and develop talent through proper selection and training efforts
  • Ability to be assertive in effectively dealing with conflict. Ability to achieve results, show persistence and perseverance
  • Be able to pass a standard drug test and qualify as being drug-free under the legal and medical guidelines permitted by the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988

Physical Demands and Work Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to listen, comprehend and communicate effectively. They must be able to maintain a physical condition and stamina appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include: sitting for extended periods of time, walking and operating assigned office or material handling equipment, and other duties as assigned. Some requirements may be modified to accommodate individuals with disabilities.
  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and use the hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools or controls
  • The employee must frequently walk, talk or hear, and reach with the hands and arms; occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel
  • The employee must occasionally exert or lift up to 50 pounds and frequently exert or lift moderate amounts of weight
  • Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including sufficient visual acuity to check accounting reports, invoices, customer IDs, and other written documents
  • The employee must be able to climb a ladder to retrieve inaccessible items for customers located above freezer cases or from stockrooms and other storage areas
  • The employee must have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of glass or plastic containers having liquid contents), shoplifting and other security assistance requests, customer accidents, etc.
  • The work environment includes occasional exposure to, in, or around refrigerated storage areas and relatively damp and humid conditions
  • Transportation (the job requires the ability to travel/ Mileage Reimbursement will apply)
  • Typically, the noise level in the work environment is moderate; however, on occasion, it can be somewhat noisy when power tools and equipment are in use or when duties require a temporary presence in the compressor room
