Job description

Overview
The Director of Leadership Development ("Director") will serve as the primary architect and leader of the newly established Leadership Academy, an institutional program designed to strengthen leadership skills among NYMC faculty. The Director will be responsible for developing the Academy from the ground up, including its vision, structure, curriculum, programming, and evaluation. This role will also include providing individualized leadership counseling and coaching to faculty to support their growth as academic, clinical, and administrative leaders. The Director will ensure the Leadership Academy becomes a sustainable, high impact program that advances institutional priorities across both NYMC and WMC.
Responsibilities
Leadership Academy Development (Primary Function)
  • Lead the creation, design, and launch of the NYMC Leadership Academy from inception to implementation.
  • Develop the Academy's mission, structure, curriculum, core competencies, and learning outcomes.
  • Create and deliver leadership coursework, workshops, case discussions, and simulations.
  • Identify and engage internal and external guest speakers, facilitators, and subject matter experts.
  • Establish enrollment processes, participation criteria, and program expectations for faculty.

Leadership Coaching & Individual Development
  • Provide one on one leadership coaching and counseling to faculty at all career stages.
  • Conduct leadership assessments and assist faculty in developing individualized leadership development plans.
  • Monitor and evaluate faculty participants' progress throughout the Leadership Academy.

Program Administration & Management
  • Oversee all operational aspects of the Leadership Academy, including scheduling, communications, documentation, and event execution.
  • Conduct recurring institutional needs assessments to ensure the Academy remains responsive to faculty leadership needs.
  • Track, measure, and report program participation and outcomes to NYMC and WMC leadership.

Institutional Collaboration
  • Collaborate with department chairs, faculty affairs, GME, CME, and WMC leadership to integrate leadership development into faculty career pathways.
  • Ensure the Academy supports leadership development needs across both education and clinical service sectors.
  • Maintain a central, accessible repository of leadership development resources.

Scholarship & Continuous Improvement
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of Leadership Academy programming using evidence based approaches.
  • Stay current with leadership development best practices, adult learning theory, and organizational development strategies.
  • Engage in scholarly activities related to leadership education, including presentations or academic publications.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Identify opportunities for philanthropic or grant support to expand the Academy.
  • Serve on committees or institutional initiatives as requested by the Dean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education:
  • M.D., D.O., Ph.D., Ed.D., MBA, M.Ed., or equivalent terminal degree required.
  • Training or certification in leadership development, organizational behavior, or executive coaching preferred.

Experience:
  • Minimum of five years of experience in leadership development, faculty affairs, organizational development, or similar academic/healthcare roles.
  • Experience designing adult learning programs, workshops, or leadership curricula.
  • Prior experience coaching, mentoring, or advising faculty strongly preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital learning or professional development platforms.
  • Familiarity with leadership assessment tools (e.g., 360 feedback instruments) preferred.

Professional Attributes:
  • Deep understanding of leadership theory, organizational dynamics, and adult learning.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to design and build new programs, manage multiple projects, and collaborate effectively across units.
  • Commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical leadership.
