What is a lead web developer?

Lead Web Developers are experienced professionals who oversee the design, development, and maintenance of websites or web applications. They manage teams of developers, set technical direction, and ensure that projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. In addition to coding, Lead Web Developers often coordinate with other departments, mentor junior developers, and stay updated with the latest web technologies. Their role is crucial in bridging the gap between technical execution and business goals.

How does a lead web developer typically balance coding tasks with team leadership responsibilities?

As a Lead Web Developer, you'll often split your time between hands-on coding and overseeing your team's work. While you still contribute directly to complex features or critical bug fixes, a significant part of your role involves code reviews, mentoring junior developers, and coordinating with designers and project managers. Balancing these tasks requires strong organizational skills and clear communication to ensure project deadlines are met without sacrificing code quality. Many Lead Web Developers find that setting aside dedicated blocks of time for both coding and leadership duties helps maintain focus and productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lead web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Web Developer, you need expertise in front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and frameworks like React or Node.js), along with experience leading development teams and a solid grasp of software architecture. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and sometimes relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer) is highly valuable. Strong leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage projects, guide teams, and liaise with stakeholders. These competencies ensure that complex web projects are delivered efficiently, align with business objectives, and maintain high technical standards.

What is the difference between Lead Web Developer vs Web Developer?

Is 40 too old to become a lead web developer?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a lead web developer; many professionals transition into web development or advance their careers at 40 or older. Success depends on skills, experience, continuous learning, and staying current with technologies like JavaScript, frameworks, and development tools.

Job description

Company Description

iFLIP4 is the brand and network for people to care. We're creating the one home for everything related to nonprofits, doing good, and changing the world -- targeted at millennials who overwhelmingly want to do good but don't know how. They can come to the site and learn about causes with articles, videos and games; they can find a nonprofit they love; and they can support it all in one place. The first way they can do that is that for every iFLIP4 product purchased, iFLIP4 donates half of the profits to the charity of their choice.

Pre-launch, we have been featured in the New York Post, and we are also the recipients of the Brown University C.V. Starr Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship.

We have iFLIP4 Ambassadors (campus representatives) on 50+ college and high school campuses in the US, UK, and Canada, and iFLIP4.com has been visited in 140+ countries.

Some of our advisors include a former treasurer of IBM, a media expert who helped launch MTV, a Fulbright winning law professor, and a senior advertising executive in charge of $250 million of ad sales at Yahoo.
