What is a lead user experience designer?

Lead User Experience Designers are professionals responsible for guiding the overall user experience (UX) strategy and execution for digital products or services. They oversee a team of UX designers, collaborate with stakeholders, and ensure that products are intuitive, accessible, and meet user needs. Their role often includes conducting user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and maintaining design standards across projects. Lead UX Designers also mentor team members and help align UX initiatives with business goals.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a lead user experience designer?

To thrive as a Lead User Experience Designer, you need expertise in user research, interaction design, prototyping, and a strong portfolio, often supported by a degree in design or related fields. Mastery of design tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and familiarity with usability testing platforms are typically expected. Outstanding communication, leadership, and collaboration skills set top performers apart, enabling them to guide teams and articulate design decisions. These skills are crucial for creating user-centered products, driving innovation, and aligning design strategies with business goals.

How does a lead user experience designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

This often involves leading design workshops, presenting user research findings, and facilitating design reviews to gather feedback. You'll also work closely with development teams to ensure design specifications are implemented accurately and may mentor junior designers to uphold UX best practices. Effective communication and the ability to balance user needs with business goals are key to success in this collaborative environment.

Please note that for this position, we are only accepting direct applications. Submissions from agencies will not be considered.

The OpportunityWhat You'll Do
  • Set and communicate the overall UX design strategy for the product, aligning it with the company vision and product roadmap
  • Maintain HR Acuity's Design System in tight collaboration with engineering - components, patterns, tokens, guidelines, and documentation - and drive its adoption across design and engineering
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of three UX Designers and one UX Researcher, setting clear expectations, giving thoughtful feedback, and supporting their development
  • Stay hands-on: personally design wireframes, mockups, interaction specs, and functional prototypes for high-impact and complex work
  • Deeply understand the needs of our customers - their ER professionals, managers, and employees - and translate those needs into user-centric designs
  • Partner with the UX Researcher to plan and act on concept and usability testing, turning customer feedback into design decisions
  • Establish and uphold UX standards, review the team's work, and ensure consistency and quality across every product offering
  • Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering to develop new products and features, from early concept through delivery
  • Present design work and rationale to stakeholders and leadership, using day-in-the-life stories to bring the experience to life
  • Balance short-term fixes with the long-term design vision, making pragmatic trade-offs without losing sight of the roadmap
  • Champion accessibility and inclusive design across the product, and own the relationship with our accessibility vendor
  • Keep current with competitor products, design tooling, and industry trends, including emerging AI-assisted design capabilities
What Success Looks Like
  • The Design System is consistently adopted across design and engineering, reducing rework and speeding up delivery
  • Your design team is growing in skill and confidence, with clear goals and regular, constructive feedback
  • Usability testing and research findings are routinely shaping product decisions, not just validating them after the fact
  • Product and Engineering leaders see UX as a strategic partner in early-stage planning, not a downstream reviewer
  • Accessibility is built into the design process by default, not addressed as an afterthought
  • Stakeholders can clearly see the connection between design decisions and customer outcomes, thanks to how you present and tell the story of the work
QualificationsWhat You Bring
  • 8+ years of UX or product design experience, including 2+ years leading, mentoring, or managing designers, ideally in a B2B SaaS platform environment
  • Proven experience building, deploying, and maintaining a design system at scale, and driving its adoption across cross-functional teams
  • Expert-level proficiency with Figma, including hands-on experience with Figma's AI tools and a point of view on how AI can accelerate the design workflow
  • Demonstrable experience designing for complex workflows in B2B or B2C SaaS products, across web, native, and mobile-first approaches
  • Strong command of user-centric design strategy, UX principles, interaction design, and usability techniques
  • Experience partnering with UX research - or running research yourself - to inform and validate design decisions
  • A track record of setting design direction and standards in an agile, fast-moving environment
  • Excellent communication, storytelling, and data-presentation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Strong attention to detail paired with the judgment to know when to prioritize speed
  • A collaborative, humble leadership style that lifts up the people around you
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, dynamic environment
  • A creative problem-solver who brings a clear point of view and a bias toward shipping
What We Offer
  • Real ownership of a growing Design System and the chance to shape how design and engineering work together
  • A seat at the table - you'll help set product strategy alongside Product Management and Engineering leadership, not just execute on it
  • A small, talented team to lead and grow, with the mentorship and autonomy to build your own leadership style
  • Meaningful work: your team's designs directly shape how HR professionals handle some of the hardest moments in the workplace
  • The flexibility of a fully remote role, with a collaborative team culture that doesn't depend on being in one place
  • Modern tooling and the latitude to bring AI-assisted design workflows into how the team works
