How does a lead front end engineer typically balance hands-on coding with team leadership responsibilities?

As a Lead Front End Engineer, you will often split your time between writing code and guiding your team. Job description

US Mobile is building the future of wireless communication. The goal: one unified network open to any person and any device, worldwide. Connection without walls.

Weโ€™re getting there by empowering customers. All three major networks on one phone and one plan, plus home internet from Starlink. No lock-in. No commitments. Custom fit plans at every price point. 24/7 customer support with real people, empowered to help. We get real-time feedback from Reddit, surveys, and customer support informing product roadmaps and everything we do. Itโ€™s working โ€” weโ€™re The Wirecutterโ€™s favorite cellular carrier, and Consumer Reports has named us the top-rated mobile carrier two years in a row.*

And weโ€™re building innovative systems that scale. A network agnostic tech stack. Agile, cross-functional teams built on trust and mutual respect. This work isnโ€™t for everyone. If you work fast, flexibly, and collaboratively โ€” without compromising standards โ€” we want to hear from you.

Weโ€™re looking for a Lead Frontend Engineer to help us build and grow our frontend team as we double our team. This is a high-impact, high-ownership role where youโ€™ll manage and mentor a team of engineers while architecting and building fast, accessible, and elegant web and mobile applications used by over 1 million subscribers. Our challenges are both technical and strategic.

About the Role

The Lead Frontend Engineer owns the growth and output of a frontend engineering pod โ€” hiring, developing, and managing a small team โ€” while remaining a strong hands-on contributor and a voice in technical direction. This is a player-coach role: youโ€™ll write code and shape architecture alongside your team, not just direct it from a distance, while also partnering with Talent to build out the team and with Engineering leadership to shape where the frontend goes next.

You will:
  • Build and lead a team โ€” hire, mentor, and grow a high-performing group of frontend engineers as we scale.
  • Shape technical direction โ€” influence architecture, tooling, and roadmap decisions across frontend systems.
  • Stay hands-on โ€” architect and build fast, accessible, elegant web and mobile applications used by over 1 million subscribers.
  • Scale our systems โ€” help us grow to tens of millions of customers and connected devices.
  • Raise the bar โ€” build quality tools and frameworks to ensure a high-quality product.
  • Champion accessibility and performance โ€” treat both as first-class concerns across the frontend org.
  • Drive innovation โ€” work on mission-critical projects like our next-gen agentic AI chatbot, a customer-centric interface giving full control over phone lines, a next-generation usage dashboard, and an e-commerce experience unmatched in telecom.
Responsibilities:
  • Influence technical direction and architectural decisions across frontend systems, balancing pragmatism with long-term scalability
  • Build a state-driven UI that adapts seamlessly to network-specific quirks
  • Support legacy and new plans simultaneously
  • Create elegant, highly accessible (a11y-first) interfaces that work across platforms
  • Lead and contribute to building modern frontend features using React, TypeScript, and CSS
  • Design and build UI components for both web and React Native applications
  • Architect scalable systems to support millions of user interactions across different networks
  • Collaborate closely with backend, product, and design teams to drive elegant, data-informed solutions
  • Work with emerging technologies like Rust where performance or architecture demands
  • Set and uphold engineering standards and best practices across your team
  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of frontend engineers โ€” owning hiring decisions, performance management, career development, and day-to-day team health
  • Partner closely with Talent/Recruiting to define hiring needs, shape interview processes, and build out the frontend engineering team as we scale.
Qualifications:
  • 12+ years of frontend engineering experience building production-grade UIs, including experience in a technical leadership or people management role
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Demonstrated experience managing, mentoring, and growing frontend engineers, including hiring and performance management
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction and drive architectural decisions at a team or organizational level
  • Strong stakeholder management skills โ€” able to represent frontend engineeringโ€™s perspective persuasively in front of executives, PMs, and cross-functional partners
  • Comfort operating in a fast paced environment โ€” wearing multiple hats across engineering, hiring, and cross-functional work
  • Experience partnering with Talent/Recruiting to build and scale engineering teams โ€” defining roles, running hiring processes, and closing candidates
  • Proficiency in TypeScript, React, and CSS-in-JS or equivalent styling approaches
  • Experience with state management and data fetching libraries (e.g., Tanstack Query, Redux, Zustand)
  • A strong eye for UX/UI detail, accessibility, and responsive design
  • Comfort dealing with complexity: legacy code, varied device support, and cross-platform consistency
  • A self-starter who can define and deliver high-leverage solutions with minimal oversight
  • Bonus: Experience with Rust, Mobile Development (React Native), or Telecom-related apps
Benefits and Perks:
  • Annual company offsites
  • Competitive Salary
  • Gym reimbursement
  • Commute reimbursement
  • Flexible working hours
  • Professional development stipend
  • Flexible time off
  • Cell phone service (up to $100/mo)

$180,000 - $240,000 a year
