Lead Embedded Systems Engineer information

What is the difference between Lead Embedded Systems Engineer vs Embedded Systems Engineer?

AspectLead Embedded Systems EngineerEmbedded Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related; often with certifications in embedded systemsBachelor's or higher in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related; certifications are optional
Work EnvironmentLeading projects, coordinating teams, designing system architectureDeveloping, testing, and debugging embedded software and hardware components
Industry UsageUsed in industries like automotive, aerospace, consumer electronicsCommonly employed in similar industries for embedded product development

The main difference is that a Lead Embedded Systems Engineer oversees projects and teams, while an Embedded Systems Engineer focuses on developing and testing embedded solutions. The lead role involves more leadership and strategic responsibilities, whereas the engineer role is more technical and hands-on.

ForceX is seeking an engineer to deliver mission-focused technical solutions from concept through deployment and sustainment. The role partners across disciplines to translate requirements into executable designs that meet performance, cost, and schedule objectives. This Systems Engineering role is focused on product and mission-system engineering, including requirements, architecture, integration, verification, and lifecycle technical execution. This level is a subject matter expert role with comprehensive job-area knowledge and deep project management capability.

The Lead, Systems Engineer - Requirements & Integration role will lead engineering product development effort of the VAMPIRE Counter-UAS system, to include: rapid prototype development, baseline integration, system requirements development, market trade studies, make/buy analysis, acceptance testing, system verification & validation, and product lifecycle sustainment. The position connects technical intent to executable engineering work by structuring requirements, assessing alternatives, and coordinating integration readiness across the team. The role is intended for an engineer who is comfortable moving between analysis, internal R&D (IRAD) planning, and cross-functional technical coordination within an integrated product team (IPT).

Essential Functions:

- Develop, refine, and maintain system requirements and traceability.

- Conduct and document trade studies that compare alternative approaches.

- Build and coordinate integration plans across engineering disciplines.

- Prepare technical content for reviews, assessments, and milestone activities.

- Identify requirement gaps, interface issues, and integration risks early.

- Develop and sustain controlled systems engineering artifacts.

- Maintain controlled analytical artifacts and supporting technical documentation.

- Develop and sustain engineering work products throughout product development lifecycle.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate hardware, software, and operational constraints into practical solutions.
- Conduct technical analysis, risk identification, and trade studies to support design decisions.
- Present technical status, issues, and recommendations in formal and informal reviews.
- Contribute to proposal, planning, and execution activities aligned to program milestones.
- Support compliance with customer, regulatory, and security requirements.
- Travel up to 25% to support integration, test, customer engagement, and program execution.
- Support work performed in a classified and or controlled environment.
- Perform technical planning, requirements decomposition, interface definition, and verification strategy for mission systems.
- Execute system integration, validation, and technical baselines across concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal.
- Lead design reviews, peer reviews, and technical interchanges across program and product teams
- Produce and maintain system engineering artifacts including requirements traceability, risk registers, and verification evidence.
- Ensure technical compliance with security and government requirements.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.
- 9+ years of experience in systems engineering methods across full lifecycle activities.
- 9+ years of experience with requirements management, risk management, and system integration and verification practices.

Preferred Additional Skills:

- Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline preferred; Engineering preferred, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science acceptable.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional engineering teams.
- Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) familiarity.
- Experience with multi-domain mission systems and secure architectures.
- Experience supporting government or defense technical reviews.
- Experience balancing technical, schedule, and cost constraints across system-level decisions.
- Ability to collaborate across software, hardware, mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and program teams.
- Role scope expectation: Manages large, complex project initiatives of substantial importance with minimal oversight.
- Collaboration expectation: Communicates across organizational boundaries to explain and influence changes to technical practices and approaches

- Experience with requirements traceability and verification planning.

- Experience supporting system integration in hardware-intensive development efforts.

- Experience preparing technical review packages and engineering assessments.
