Position Summary
The University of New Mexico Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is seeking applicants for a Counselor/Social Worker, Sr. position.
Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is a comprehensive health service available to all currently enrolled UNM students. SHAC is located North of Johnson Center and across from the Student Union Building. It is open Monday through Friday and is closed on all UNM holidays. Services include medical appointments (scheduled and same-day), pharmacy, women's and men's health, allergy and immunization, medical specialty clinics, physical therapy, lab and x-ray, travel health clinic and counseling services, as well as health education, prevention, and promotion.

The person in this position:Provides or oversees the provision of a wide range of professional social and/or mental health services which may include: psychosocial evaluations/assessments, interventions, diagnostic, counseling therapy, crisis intervention, and/or case management services in a high-intensity clinical environment which requires a high degree of independent decision-making. Provides clinical supervision, guidance, training, debriefing and leadership to other mental health/health care professionals, students, and interns engaged in related activities.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check when working in a child classroom setting.
  • CPR and Basic First Aid Certificate may be a requirement for some positions in this classification.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • If located at the UNM Children's Campus, successful candidate must pass a comprehensive post-offer, pre-employment criminal and New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) fingerprint background check, and a continued successful status will be verified by periodic future background checks.
  • Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
  • May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or an equivalent field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: New Mexico Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or equivalent OR Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or equivalent OR licensed out of state and eligible for NM licensure.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A New Mexico license to practice is required before new counselors/social workers hold clinic hours. While a New Mexico license is preferred upon application, we encourage applicants from outside of NM to apply, with the expectation that they will pursue obtaining a NM license.
  • At least 3 years of experience serving on multidisciplinary team in an outpatient setting.
  • Experience in managing mental health crises, suicidality, and victim violence.
  • Training and experience in time-limited treatment approaches.
  • Experience with use of technology in Behavioral Health/Teletherapy.
  • Experience assessing and treating issues common in a college student population.
  • Experience developing and facilitating outreach programming for diverse/marginalized populations.
  • Substance abuse/ recovery skills to assess and refer to appropriate level of care.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse populations and delivering services in an equitable, accessible, and inclusive manner in a minority-serving institution or similar environment.
  • Willingness to engage in cultural humility and culturally sustaining practices at UNM as a minority-serving institution.
