DETAILS ABOUT THE ROLE, REQUIRMENTS, BENEFITS, AND HOW TO APPLY           

Works with a wide variety of samples, including organic and inorganic materials, to prepare and analyze them using spectroscopic, chromatographic, thermal and various powder characterization techniques in conjunction with test standards and established methods of analysis.  The LCMS Chemist is an integral part of our technical team, working alongside technicians, chemists and other analytical teams within our Analytical Laboratory.

Essential Functions*:

Ability to perform the following responsibilities or duties:

  • Perform analyses of organic materials by infrared spectroscopy, Liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy (LCMS) and associated methods
  • Prepare organic samples for analysis using techniques such as extraction,
  • Perform characterization of powder materials using techniques such as laser diffraction, powder rheology, BET, Hall Flow, Tap Density, Apparent Density, Helium Pycnometry  and Sieve Analysis
  • Perform basic instrument maintenance and upkeep as detailed in operating procedures
  • Recommend updates to methods and procedures used in material analysis
  • Interpret test data and final results.
  • Strictly adhere to quality protocols as outlined in the methods or company procedures.
  • Enter test results into the Lab Information Management System (LIMS) database 
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to maintain quality assurance of results and seamless customer service
  • Ability to select and apply general and specialized methods, techniques, and instruments commonly used in the laboratory.
  • Analyze a wide variety of samples for which there are standard or established methods or analysis or for which the adaptation of standards is obvious.
  • Dedicated to ensuring safety standards are maintained.
  • Maintain detailed records and prepare written notes specific to issues during analysis.

Incidental Functions:

  • Adheres to quality and safety standards.
  • Special projects and/or duties as assigned or required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other physical science which include at least 2 years of chemistry coursework in addition to at least one year of laboratory coursework.
  • Alternatively, an Associate’s degree or certification as Laboratory Technician or a related technical field in combination with at least 2 years’ experience operating analytical instrumentation used for chemical and physical analysis in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience handling and processing samples in preparation for analysis, including organics, metals and ceramics.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and approved chemical disposal practices.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of the operation and care of specialized laboratory equipment. 
  • Ability to follow established methods and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn new tasks, and flexibility in work assignments.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to organize and multi-task.

Work Conditions/Physical Demands:

General lab environment includes sitting, standing and walking; infrequent lifting of up to 20 lbs., pulling, pushing, carrying, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, and crouching.  Work is completed in a lab environment that contains toxic materials with possible exposure to odors, acids, fumes and other reactive materials.
