Lcms Analyst information
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Lcms Analyst position, and why are they important?
To thrive as an LCMS Analyst, you need a solid background in analytical chemistry or biochemistry, with hands-on experience in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) techniques and a relevant science degree. Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting LC-MS instruments, data analysis software (such as Analyst or MassLynx), and potentially certifications like ASCP are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate results clearly make you stand out in this position. These capabilities ensure accurate data interpretation, efficient laboratory workflows, and effective collaboration with research teams or clients.
What does a typical day look like for an LCMS Analyst in a laboratory setting?
A typical day for an LCMS Analyst involves preparing and analyzing samples using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry instruments, reviewing and validating data, and reporting results to senior scientists or project managers. You'll also maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure all analyses comply with quality standards and regulatory guidelines. Collaboration with colleagues, such as chemists, lab technicians, and quality assurance staff, is common for discussing methods, sharing findings, and streamlining lab operations. The role offers a mix of independent, hands-on work and team-based problem solving, making it both challenging and rewarding.
What does an LCMS Analyst do?
An LCMS Analyst operates and maintains Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) instruments to analyze chemical or biological samples. They prepare samples, calibrate equipment, interpret data, and ensure quality control in laboratory settings. LCMS Analysts work in industries such as pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and food safety to detect and quantify substances. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of laboratory protocols are essential for this role.

Job description
Position Summary
The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for performing complex analytical testing on cannabis and cannabis-derived products using advanced instrumentation such as HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, and microbial testing platforms. This role requires a high level of technical expertise, strict adherence to SOPs, and compliance with all state regulations and ISO/IEC 17025 standards. Laboratory Analysts ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results, maintain detailed records, and contribute to the overall quality and efficiency of laboratory operations.
Key Responsibilities
Primary Duties
- Conduct analytical testing of cannabis samples using designated instrumentation (e.g., HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, microbial platforms).
- Perform calibrations, system suitability checks, and routine maintenance on laboratory instruments.
- Analyze data, interpret results, and prepare reports in accordance with SOPs and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate chain-of-custody and testing documentation.
- Troubleshoot basic instrument and method issues under the guidance of senior staff or management.
Quality & Compliance
- Follow all applicable state regulations, ISO/IEC 17025 requirements, and laboratory SOPs.
- Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities, including proficiency testing.
- Maintain clean, organized workspaces and properly store reagents, standards, and samples.
- Adhere to safety protocols including the proper use of PPE and safe handling of chemicals and cannabis materials.
Operational Support
- Assist in the development and validation of analytical methods as needed.
- Provide training to Laboratory Technicians or new Analysts as directed.
- Participate in internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or related scientific field required.
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in analytical laboratory testing, preferably in a regulated industry.
- Cannabis testing experience is a plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Proficient in the operation of laboratory instrumentation (HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, microbial platforms).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and LIMS software.
Requirements
- Must meet the minimum legal age requirement to work with cannabis in the state of operation.
- Ability to pass a background check in accordance with applicable laws.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs., stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive motions.
Working Conditions
- Laboratory setting with exposure to solvents, chemicals, and cannabis-related odors.
- Extended periods of standing and occasional lifting.
- Full-time schedule; may require occasional evenings or weekends to meet deadlines or support client needs.
