Job description

Position Overview

Seoul Semiconductor is seeking an experienced Field Applications Engineer – IT Display Division to provide technical design-in support for the North American business and work closely with the Sales Manager(s) in supporting existing customers and developing new opportunities.

The Field Applications Engineer (FAE) will serve as the primary technical resource for design-in, product integration, and solution architecture involving Seoul Semiconductor’s advanced LED and semiconductor solutions for IT Display, and related electronic applications.

Working in close partnership with the Sales Manager to drive business development, this position will lead customer engineering design reviews, evaluate technical specifications, and address complex application challenges. The FAE will serve as the core technical bridge—interfacing directly with global HQ R&D and Module engineering teams to align product capabilities with customer technical requirements, and ensure seamless execution from concept to mass production.

The position requires a strong combination of technical expertise, customer-facing communication, technical sales support ability, and cross-functional coordination between commercial and engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive Technical Design-Ins: Lead the technical promotion and design-in of LED solutions for backlight technologies (Mini-LED, edge-lit, direct-lit) into customer LCD display products (laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers) to secure design wins and support revenue growth.
  • Support System Integration: Provide hands-on engineering support, perform optical and electrical simulations, and offer precise LED parameter tuning recommendations to ensure optimal customer system performance.
  • Lead Design Reviews & Business Development: Partner with the IT Sales Manager in customer meetings to review schematics and system architectures, evaluate technical constraints, and position Seoul Semiconductor solutions effectively against competitor offerings.
  • Resolve Technical Issues: Act as the primary technical contact to debug, troubleshoot, and resolve system integration challenges on-site or remotely during the customer's prototyping and NPI (New Product Introduction) phases.
  • Bridge Customer & HQ R&D: Translate complex customer technical requirements and emerging IT display market trends back to global HQ R&D and Module teams, guiding next-generation LED product roadmaps and custom module builds.
  • Create Technical Collateral: Develop high-impact technical presentations, application notes, and reference demos; deliver hands-on technical support for customer-facing promotional events and industry trade shows.
  • Customer Quality & Reliability Support: Partner with the internal Quality Engineering team as needed to support critical customer quality activities, providing technical context on application-level failures, facilitating root-cause investigations, and ensuring rapid resolution to safeguard customer satisfaction.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related engineering discipline required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Relevant Experience: Minimum of 5 years of Field Applications Engineering (FAE), Applications Engineering, System Integration, or Technical Sales/Solutions Engineering experience within the LED, display, semiconductor, or electronic components industry.
  • Display & Backlight Expertise: Strong technical background in LCD display applications (TV, laptops, monitors, tablets, e-readers) and backlight architecture, including Mini-LED, edge-lit, and direct-lit optical designs.
  • Simulation & Technical Evaluation: Familiarity with optical, thermal, and electrical simulation concepts and tool outputs (e.g., LucidShape, LightTools, SPEOS, PICLS, LTspice, or FEA thermal software); ability to review customer simulation results, evaluate package/board-level stackups, and recommend circuit, layout, and optical parameter adjustments.
  • Application Fundamentals: Strong understanding of LED electrical, optical, colorimetric, thermal, and mechanical package characteristics. Knowledge of driver interface, PCB layout, and thermal management a plus.
  • Customer & Commercial Acumen: Proven track record of conducting technical design reviews, presenting solutions to customer R&D teams, and collaborating with sales teams to drive design wins.
  • System Debugging & Problem-Solving: Demonstrated capability to debug system-level hardware/optical integration issues in displays, during prototyping and NPI phases using structured engineering methodologies.
  • Quality & Reliability Familiarity: Strong foundation in LED/semiconductor reliability testing, product qualification, and failure analysis concepts; ability to collaborate with internal Quality Engineers on technical root-cause analysis (8D, 5 Whys) as needed.
  • Software & Communication: Proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel) for developing technical collateral, customer presentations, and engineering reports; experience with CRM systems.
  • Mobility: Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed for customer design reviews, technical promotion, trade shows, on-site debugging, and alignment with global HQ engineering teams.

Skills & Capabilities

  • Strong customer-facing communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as the technical and quality partner to the Sales Manager while maintaining independent responsibility for quality-related decisions and investigations.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to translate complex engineering and failure-analysis information into clear explanations for customers, sales teams, and management.
  • Strong sense of urgency and responsiveness when addressing customer engineering deliverables.
  • Ability to professionally manage difficult or time-sensitive customer situations.
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills with the ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously.
  • Self-driven, results-oriented, and capable of working with limited supervision.
  • Excellent cross-functional and cross-cultural communication skills when working with global customers, Headquarters, manufacturing facilities, and business partners.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and customer requirements in a dynamic business environment.
