What is a layout designer?

Layout designers are professionals who arrange visual elements—such as text, images, and graphics—on digital or printed pages to ensure clear communication and aesthetic appeal. They often work in industries like publishing, advertising, web design, and marketing, using specialized software to create visually engaging layouts. Layout designers collaborate with writers, editors, and other creative professionals to achieve the desired look and functionality for magazines, brochures, websites, and other media. Their goal is to guide the reader’s eye and make information easy to understand while maintaining brand consistency.

What does a layout designer do?

A layout designer arranges images, text, and other elements in print and online publications to create an overall attractive and cohesive look. As a layout designer, your job duties include creating mockups for client approval, balancing layout elements, collaborating with copywriters, and performing editorial tasks. To begin a career as a layout designer, you typically need at least an associate degree in graphic design or a related field and experience with design software, like Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. Additional qualifications include advanced computer skills, creativity, and attention to detail.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a layout designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Layout Designer, you need strong visual design skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in design principles, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and sometimes CAD tools is typically required. Creativity, time management, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and meeting deadlines. These abilities ensure visually compelling and functional layouts that meet client or project needs and uphold brand consistency.

What are some common challenges layout designers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Layout Designers often collaborate closely with copywriters, illustrators, marketers, and developers, which can lead to challenges such as reconciling differing creative visions or adapting designs to meet technical constraints. Balancing aesthetic appeal with functional requirements and ensuring consistency across various formats are also frequent hurdles. Effective communication and flexibility are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering cohesive, high-quality layouts that satisfy all stakeholders.

What is the difference between Layout Designer vs Graphic Designer?

How do you become a layout designer?

To become a layout designer, you typically need a bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field. Developing skills in design software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator, along with a strong portfolio showcasing your work, is essential; some positions also value experience or certifications in design principles and layout techniques.

Is layout art a good career?

A career as a layout designer involves creating visual arrangements for print and digital media, requiring skills in graphic design software like Adobe InDesign or Photoshop. It offers opportunities in advertising, publishing, and web design, with job prospects influenced by industry demand and the ability to adapt to new design tools and trends.

Job description

About Giga
Giga is building gigawatts of AI data centers to hasten a future of intelligence and abundance. We build data centers fast and at scale by combining the capabilities of an equipment supplier, engineering firm, general contractor, and real estate developer under one roof. Our team moves quickly and thinks practically. If you're ready to make an impact in an industry that matters, we're looking for people like you.
Why join Giga
  • The Pace: We're building at a speed most companies talk about but never actually operate at. If you've been bored somewhere else, you won't be here.
  • The Impact: Every person at Giga touches the work that matters. No layers, no waiting for approval chains. You'll see your fingerprints on what we ship.
  • The Team: A team of operators defining the future of AI infrastructure. We recruit A-players from the most innovative companies in the world, and they choose Giga because the work here means more.
  • The Moment: AI doesn't run without power, and that's us. Giga is the picks and shovels behind the AI revolution. This industry is about to explode, and you'll be in the room where it's already happening.

What you'll do
As BIM Designer, Civil & Underground Utilities, you'll own everything that sits below grade and outside the building line in our federated model. Anything from foundations and equipment pads, electrical duct banks and underground raceway, grounding, and equipment yard layout. This role sits inside our growing BIM function, working shoulder-to-shoulder with electrical, structural, and civil designers to keep one federated model as the single source of truth from design through fabrication and field support.
Where you'll work
We are an in-office culture - velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.
That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.
Responsibilities
  • Model foundations, equipment pads, embeds, and anchor bolt setting plans for transformers, substations, switchgear, and other heavy equipment, coordinated against equipment general arrangement drawings
  • Model electrical duct banks and underground raceway - conduit arrangement, encasement, bend radii, spare capacity, manholes, and pull boxes
  • Model the grounding system - ground grids, rods, conductor routing, and connections to pads, structures, and fence lines
  • Model outdoor structures and equipment yard layout, including electrical clearances, phase spacing, and maintenance access
  • Take in Civil 3D surfaces, utility networks, and survey data and reconcile them into the federated model, including shared coordinates and georeferencing
  • Own the outdoor and underground models within the federated set and run underground clash cycles - duct bank against foundation, grounding against structure - resolving conflicts rather than just reporting them
  • Produce foundation plans, duct bank plans and sections, grounding plans, and yard layout drawings to Giga's CAD standards
  • Generate model-based quantity takeoffs for concrete, reinforcement, steel, and conduit to support estimating and procurement
  • Build and maintain the parametric family library for repeatable outdoor and underground content - pads, duct bank sections, manholes, and bus supports
Requirements
  • Expert-level Autodesk Revit, 5-8 years, including structural modeling, family creation, parametric content, worksharing, and shared coordinates
  • Demonstrated experience modeling foundations, equipment pads, and anchor bolt or embed layouts for heavy equipment
  • Demonstrated experience modeling underground electrical raceway or duct banks - routing, encasement, spare capacity, manholes, and pull boxes
  • Industrial, energy, substation, or mission-critical background; commercial or residential Revit experience alone will not transfer to this scope
  • Able to read, link, and reconcile Civil 3D data - surfaces, pipe networks, alignments, and survey points - into a Revit model
  • Working knowledge of NEC Article 300.5, NESC / IEEE 605, IEEE 80, ASCE 7, ACI 318, and AISC 360
  • Navisworks proficiency, including running clash tests and resolving interference in your own models
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
Bonus points
  • Experience designing civil systems for data centers, mission-critical, or other technically complex industrial facilities - multi-block sites, high-density underground electrical distribution, utility interconnection
  • Substation civil and structural work - yard layout, equipment foundations, grounding grids, oil containment
  • Hands-on Civil 3D authoring ability
  • Modular or repeat-deployment work where the model drives a factory build and gets reused rather than redrawn
  • Dynamo or Revit API scripting to automate repetitive modeling and QA
Benefits
  • Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Parental leave
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Commuter benefits
  • Team on-sites where all offices come in-person to collaborate

Who we hire
We hire people who thrive in chaos and get sharper under pressure. You don't wait to be told what to do, you spot the gap and fill it. When there's work to be done, you do it. You make decisions with the information you have, move fast, and adjust along the way. We're not looking for perfect; we're looking for people who get things done.
