Position Overview
The Asphalt Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and completing asphalt paving and patching projects, while also working hands-on in the field. This role bridges leadership and production — ensuring work is done correctly, efficiently, safely, and profitably, while actively participating in daily operations.
This position requires someone who can lead by example, manage crews and job details, and still put boots on the ground when needed.
Core Responsibilities
1. Project Ownership (Start to Finish)
·        Take ownership of assigned asphalt projects from mobilization through completion
·        Review job scope, quantities, and site conditions before work begins
·        Ensure proper preparation: subgrade, milling, base repair, tack, laydown, and compaction
·        Verify work meets company standards and customer expectations
·        Ensure jobs are completed on schedule and within expected production goals
2. Field Leadership & Crew Direction
· Lead asphalt crews on-site and set daily expectations
· Assign tasks clearly and ensure crews are productive and organized
· Hold crew members accountable for performance, attitude, and workmanship
· Maintain order, pace, and professionalism on the jobsite
· Address problems immediately — no letting issues snowball
3. Hands-On Work (Working Manager Role)
· Actively participate in asphalt operations as needed, including:
o   running equipment
o   checking grades and joints
o   rolling and compaction checks
· Step in wherever production or quality requires support
· Demonstrate proper technique and work ethic by example
4. Quality Control
· Ensure proper asphalt temperatures, placement, and compaction
· Monitor joint quality, transitions, and tie-ins
· Prevent common asphalt failures such as segregation, cold joints, and poor compaction
· Perform final walk-throughs before demobilization
· Take pride in finished work — no “good enough” mentality
5. Scheduling & Coordination
· Coordinate daily tasks with Operations Manager or Owner
· Manage crew size, equipment needs, and material timing
· Communicate with asphalt plants, truck drivers, and suppliers
· Adjust plans in real time for weather, delays, or site conditions
· Ensure efficient use of labor and equipment
6. Safety & Jobsite Control
· Enforce all safety rules and company policies
· Conduct daily jobsite safety awareness
· Stop unsafe work immediately
· Ensure crew compliance with PPE and safe equipment operation
· Maintain clean, controlled, and professional job sites
7. Communication & Documentation
· Serve as the primary field contact for assigned projects
· Communicate with customers, inspectors, and property managers as needed
· Fill out daily progress reports, issues, and job status to Operations Manager/Owner
· Document issues, delays, or change conditions clearly
· No surprises — issues are communicated early
8. Cost Awareness & Production Efficiency
· Be aware of labor hours, tonnage, and production rates
· Reduce waste, rework, and downtime
· Protect company profitability through disciplined execution
· Identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements
· Treat company resources as if they were your own
Authority & Decision-Making
· Authority over assigned asphalt crews on site
· Authority to direct daily work and production methods
· Authority to stop work for safety or quality concerns
· Making recommendations on crew assignments, discipline, and training
· Operate independently within company guidelines
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
· 5+ years hands-on asphalt paving experience
· Proven experience leading asphalt crews
· Strong understanding of paving, patching, milling, and compaction
· Ability to read job scopes and understand quantities
· Valid driver’s license
· Strong communication and leadership skills
Preferred:
· Experience running multiple jobs or crews
· Equipment operation experience (paver, roller, skid steer, etc.)
· Basic scheduling and logistics knowledge
· Safety training experience
