What does a lawn sprinkler installer do?

A Lawn Sprinkler Installer is responsible for setting up and maintaining irrigation systems for lawns and gardens. Their job includes assessing the landscape, designing an efficient sprinkler layout, installing pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads, and ensuring the system operates correctly. They may also perform repairs and seasonal maintenance to keep the irrigation system running efficiently and conserve water.

What are some typical challenges faced by lawn sprinkler installers during installations, and how can they be addressed?

Lawn Sprinkler Installers often encounter challenges such as dealing with unexpected underground obstacles (like rocks or tree roots), varying soil conditions, or existing utilities that can complicate installation. Successful installers use careful site assessments, utility location services, and adaptability in their approach to overcome these issues. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication are essential soft skills for working with clients and troubleshooting system issues. These abilities ensure efficient system installation, minimize water waste, and provide excellent customer service.

This is a hands-on leadership position. The Crew Leader will work alongside the crew while providing daily direction, maintaining an efficient schedule, inspecting completed work, and ensuring every property meets our company’s quality standards.
Our services include routine lawn maintenance, landscape installation and cleanup, shrub pruning, flower-bed maintenance, sod installation, and basic irrigation repairs. The ideal candidate has professional landscaping or lawn-maintenance experience, can confidently operate commercial equipment, and takes pride in completing quality work.
We are looking for someone who is reliable, organized, productive, and able to maintain a positive attitude while working outdoors in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and work alongside a lawn-maintenance and landscaping crew.
  • Review daily routes and job instructions and ensure work is completed correctly and efficiently.
  • Perform mowing, edging, string trimming, blowing, and general property cleanup.
  • Complete flower-bed maintenance, including weed removal, mulch cultivation, debris removal, and basic plant care.
  • Prune and shape shrubs, hedges, ornamental plants, and small trees using proper pruning techniques.
  • Assist with landscape installations, seasonal cleanups, sod installation, mulch and rock installation, and other enhancement projects.
  • Perform basic irrigation repairs, including replacing sprinkler heads, nozzles, risers, and damaged dripline.
  • Safely operate company trucks, trailers, commercial mowers, string trimmers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, sod cutters, and other landscaping equipment.
  • Inspect completed properties to ensure mowing, edging, trimming, cleanup, and other services meet company standards.
  • Train and provide direction to crew members while promoting teamwork, productivity, and safe work practices.
  • Keep company vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and properly maintained.
  • Report property concerns, equipment problems, damages, customer requests, and additional work opportunities to management.
  • Communicate with customers in a courteous, professional, and helpful manner.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and represent The Grounds Guys professionally at every property.
Qualifications
  • Previous professional lawn-maintenance or landscaping experience is required.
  • Previous Crew Leader, Team Leader, or supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
  • Must be comfortable driving a company truck while pulling a landscape trailer.
  • Experience operating commercial zero-turn mowers and handheld landscaping equipment is required.
  • Knowledge of proper mowing, edging, trimming, blowing, shrub pruning, and property-cleanup techniques.
  • Basic irrigation-repair and landscape-installation experience is preferred.
  • Ability to lead a crew, communicate expectations, and maintain productivity and quality throughout the workday.
  • Strong attendance, punctuality, dependability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and use a smartphone for routes, job notes, and communication.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 40–50 pounds repeatedly.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and remain on your feet for extended periods.
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in the Texas heat, cold, rain, and other changing weather conditions.
  • Must maintain a professional appearance and a respectful, positive attitude.
What We Are Looking For
The right candidate will understand that a Crew Leader does more than complete the work. This person sets the pace for the crew, protects company equipment, pays attention to details, communicates problems promptly, and ensures our customers receive dependable, professional service.
We value team members who take ownership of their work and are committed to doing the job right.
