What is a laser optometrist?

Laser optometrists are eye care professionals who specialize in assessing patients for laser eye surgeries, such as LASIK or PRK. While optometrists do not perform the surgical procedures themselves, they play a crucial role in evaluating whether a patient is a good candidate for laser vision correction, providing pre-operative consultations, and managing post-operative care. They work closely with ophthalmologists, the medical doctors who actually perform the surgeries, to ensure optimal patient outcomes and ongoing eye health.

How does a laser optometrist typically collaborate with ophthalmologists and surgical teams?

Laser Optometrists frequently work alongside ophthalmologists and surgical teams to co-manage patient care, especially for laser vision correction procedures like LASIK or PRK. Their responsibilities often include pre-operative evaluations, post-operative follow-ups, and patient education, ensuring a seamless continuum of care. Successful collaboration requires strong communication skills and a thorough understanding of surgical protocols, as Laser Optometrists must coordinate with surgeons to monitor healing and manage any complications. This team-based approach not only enhances patient outcomes but also provides valuable opportunities for professional development and learning.

What is the difference between Laser Optometrist vs Ophthalmologist?

FeatureLaser OptometristOphthalmologist
CredentialsDoctor of Optometry (OD)Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
Work EnvironmentOptometry clinics, vision centersHospitals, surgical centers, clinics
Scope of PracticeVision exams, fitting contact lenses, pre- and post-operative care for laser proceduresDiagnosing and treating eye diseases, performing surgeries, including laser procedures

Laser Optometrists specialize in vision care and pre/post-operative management of laser eye surgeries, while Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat a broader range of eye conditions, including performing surgeries. Both roles work closely in eye health, but Ophthalmologists have a wider scope of practice and medical training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a laser optometrist?

To thrive as a Laser Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and specialized training in laser eye procedures. Familiarity with diagnostic imaging systems, laser correction equipment, and electronic medical record (EMR) software is essential. Strong patient communication, attention to detail, and decision-making skills help build trust and ensure optimal outcomes. These skills are crucial to performing precise laser treatments safely and effectively, while maintaining high standards of patient care.

Job description

Join Mountain Valley Eye Care as a Full-Time Associate Optometrist

Mountain Valley Eye Care, located in the San Luis Valley, is surrounded by some of Colorado's most beautiful scenery. Our valley attracts outdoor lovers from all around the world. Ten of Colorado's 58 14'ers lie within the San Luis Valley alone. From world class trophy fishing, big and small game hunting, three ski resorts less than two hours away, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and endless streams and trails for hiking, running or biking, we are a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Small town living and wide-open spaces are a bonus for families who need lots of room to play. With plenty of low-cost acreage available to purchase, the dream of owning or building your own home is very achievable.

Mountain Valley Eye Care itself is well known and established. We are the largest optometry clinic in Alamosa, known for personalized care, considerate staff and happy customers. We practice to the full extent of our license and cater to all ages and needs. The practice has a full range of equipment including an in-house finishing lab with blocker/edger, OCT, VF, Topographer, automated lensometers, AR, Eidon UWA retinal camera, Sonoquence and YAG laser. Our office provides services including complete eye exams (adults and children), CL fitting including scleral lenses, ocular disease management, minor lumps/bumps removal and Yag PC/PI. While our practice has a high geriatric population, we see patients of all ages daily. Mountain Valley Eye Care also contracts with Ophthalmology from Colorado Springs to allow local cataract and glaucoma surgeries, a feature that our patients love. Our practice also houses the largest optical in the valley and attracts a large patient base for purchasing eye wear.

What We Are Looking For:

We are searching for a committed and proactive Associate Optometrist eager to uphold the highest standards of patient care. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in medical optometry and a passion for providing personalized care, particularly to an older population with diverse visual and medical needs. What You Bring to the Table:

•  Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited school of optometry

•  Active and unrestricted license to practice optometry in Colorado

•  Proficiency in medical optometry, with a focus on treating age-related conditions and providing patient-centric care

•  Familiarity with retinal imaging and a commitment to utilizing advanced diagnostic technologies and procedures

•  Proven ability to track and analyze patient data to optimize treatment outcomes

•  Excellent interpersonal skills and a dedication to fostering a warm, welcoming environment for patients of all ages

What We Offer:

•  Competitive starting salary of $650/day, with an attractive bonus incentive up to 18%

•  Comprehensive benefits package

  • License fee reimbursement
  • Malpractice insurance
  • Health insurance
  • 401K match
  • Generous paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • CE reimbursement

At Mountain Valley Eye Care, we believe our team members are our greatest asset, and we are dedicated to fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment. If you're passionate about optometry and excited to serve a community like Alamosa—where quality care and meaningful patient relationships matter most—we invite you to apply.
