How much do laser dentist jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for laser dentist in the United States is $277,314.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $233,500.00 and $325,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Laser Dentist vs General Dentist?

AspectLaser DentistGeneral Dentist
CredentialsDental degree, specialized training in laser proceduresDental degree, general dental training
Work EnvironmentPrivate clinics, specialized dental officesPrivate practices, clinics, hospitals
ProceduresLaser treatments for cavities, gum disease, cosmetic proceduresFillings, cleanings, extractions, general oral care
Industry UsageGrowing niche within dentistryMainstream dental practice

Laser Dentists specialize in laser-based dental procedures, offering minimally invasive treatments. General Dentists provide comprehensive oral health care, including routine check-ups and common dental treatments. While both roles require dental degrees, Laser Dentists have additional training in laser technology, making them experts in laser-specific procedures. Patients seeking advanced, less invasive options may prefer a Laser Dentist, whereas those needing general dental care visit a General Dentist.

What is a laser dentist?

A laser dentist is a dental professional who uses specialized lasers to perform various dental procedures, such as cavity removal, gum reshaping, teeth whitening, and treating tooth sensitivity. Laser dentistry is often less invasive than traditional methods, resulting in reduced discomfort, faster healing times, and less need for anesthesia. Laser dentists receive additional training in the use of dental lasers to ensure patient safety and treatment effectiveness.

What are some unique challenges a laser dentist may face compared to traditional dentistry?

Laser dentists often encounter unique challenges, such as staying updated with rapidly evolving laser technologies and ensuring proper training on various laser devices for different dental procedures. Additionally, they must educate patients on the benefits and limitations of laser treatments, as some may be unfamiliar or apprehensive about the technology. Proper safety protocols and maintaining specialized equipment are also important aspects that require ongoing attention. Despite these challenges, laser dentistry can offer more precise, comfortable treatments and opportunities for professional growth within modern dental practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a laser dentist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Laser Dentist, you need a DDS or DMD degree, dental licensure, and specialized training in laser dentistry principles and procedures. Familiarity with dental lasers (such as Er:YAG or diode lasers), laser safety protocols, and relevant certifications from organizations like the Academy of Laser Dentistry are essential. Strong patient communication, attention to detail, and a gentle chairside manner are important soft skills for building trust and delivering comfortable care. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, precise treatments and help foster positive patient experiences in a rapidly evolving field.

Job description

Associate Dentist โ€“ Private Practice, Mentorship, Full-Time Growth Path, Future Buy-In Potential

Jesse Myers DMD Family & Cosmetic Dentistry
Staunton, Virginia

Jesse Myers DMD Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is seeking an Associate Dentist for a high-quality, out-of-network private practice in Staunton, Virginia.

This is a long-term opportunity designed to begin part-time and grow into a full-time associate role, with a possible future minority buy-in opportunity for the right candidate. The position may begin around 2 days per week as the associate schedule is built, with additional days added as patient demand, schedule readiness, and clinical fit support growth.

Our practice has an established patient base, a strong community reputation, and current new-patient demand. We emphasize high-quality, relationship-based care rather than insurance-driven volume. Our team values careful diagnosis, strong patient communication, conservative treatment planning, and long-term patient trust.

The practice is equipped with modern technology, including digital scanning, CAD/CAM/CEREC, CBCT imaging, Fotona LightWalker laser technology, ozone therapy, and airway/sleep-focused treatment options.

We also take a functional and whole-body informed approach to dentistry, recognizing the connection between oral health, periodontal health, airway, sleep, nutrition, inflammation, and overall wellness. The associate does not need to already be trained in every area of functional dentistry, laser dentistry, airway, or sleep, but should be open-minded, teachable, and interested in learning.

The ideal candidate is clinically humble, teachable, relationship-focused, and comfortable with general restorative dentistry. This could be a great fit for a newer dentist seeking mentorship and long-term development, or for an experienced dentist looking for a relationship-based private practice environment with future growth potential.

Initial responsibilities may include general restorative dentistry, fillings, emergency exams, limited exams, straightforward crowns, and other bread-and-butter general dentistry. The owner is open to mentorship in comprehensive treatment planning, conservative restorative dentistry, digital workflows, CEREC, inlays, onlays, crowns, laser dentistry, and whole-body informed patient care.

Compensation is the greater of:

$800 per clinical day
or
30% of adjusted collections

This structure provides a stable daily minimum while the associateโ€™s schedule is being built, with upside as patient flow and collections grow.

For the right associate, there may be a future opportunity to discuss practice buy-in. After at least 12 months of successful full-time associateship, the associate may be eligible to discuss a potential structured minority ownership opportunity. Any buy-in would be subject to mutual agreement, updated valuation, financing, legal documents, and continued alignment with the practiceโ€™s clinical and cultural vision.

This position is best suited for a dentist looking for a long-term private practice home, not simply a short-term job.

Interested candidates should submit a resume/CV and a brief note describing their clinical interests, long-term goals, and what they are looking for in a private practice opportunity.

Benefits:
    Medical, Dental, 401k, PTO
Compensation:
  • $85,000-$125,000/year
