Large crane operators are skilled professionals responsible for operating heavy cranes to lift, move, and position large loads on construction sites, docks, or other industrial settings. They work with various types of cranes, such as tower, mobile, or overhead cranes, ensuring that all operations are conducted safely and efficiently. Operators must read load charts, follow safety protocols, and communicate clearly with ground crews to prevent accidents. The role often requires certification, on-the-job training, and a strong understanding of mechanical systems and site regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a large crane operator?

To thrive as a Large Crane Operator, you need in-depth knowledge of crane operation, safety protocols, and equipment maintenance, typically supported by a high school diploma and a relevant crane operator certification (such as NCCCO). Familiarity with load charts, rigging hardware, computerized controls, and site-specific safety systems is essential. Attention to detail, strong communication, and situational awareness are valuable soft skills for coordinating with teams and preventing accidents. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient lifting operations and minimizing the risk of workplace incidents.

What are some common challenges faced by large crane operators on construction sites?

Large Crane Operators often encounter challenges such as working in tight or congested spaces, adapting to changing weather conditions, and maintaining constant communication with ground crews to ensure safety. Job description

#jobalert | CONTRACT | CRANE OPERATOR | MARIETTA, PA

An industrial construction contractor is adding two rough terrain crane operators to a plant shutdown at a grain and feed processing facility in Marietta, PA. The crane runs around the clock for the outage โ€” one operator on days, one on nights. The machine is a 130-ton Link-Belt RT.

  • $44.00/hour
  • 08.28.2026 through 09.08.2026 | 12-hour shifts, crane runs around the clock
  • $125.00/day per diem
  • Travel pay
  • Must be open to day/night shift
  • Will be planning to work on Sept 7th (Labor Day)

Overview

  • Operate a 130-ton Link-Belt rough terrain crane inside the load chart on every pick
  • Set up for each pick โ€” boom configuration, counterweight, outrigger position, radius โ€” in confined plant setups
  • Make the picks the outage schedule calls for: pulling and setting equipment, structural steel, and process components inside a live shutdown window
  • Perform and document daily crane inspections, and pull the machine out of service when it needs to come out
  • Coordinate every lift with site supervision, riggers, and signalpersons
  • Hold your shift โ€” 12 hours, days or nights โ€” through 09.08.2026; the other operator relieves you and the crane does not sit
  • Work to grain and feed processing protocols: combustible dust control, hot work permits, overhead and confined lifts

Skills & Experience

  • NCCCO with TLL Endorsement
  • Recent seat time on rough terrain cranes in the 100-ton class or larger
  • Load chart discipline and documented daily inspections
  • Available the full run, 08.28.2026 through 09.08.2026, on 12-hour shifts
  • Own PPE and standard safety wear
  • Link-Belt RT time โ€” RTC-80130, RTC-80100, or comparable
  • Shutdown, turnaround, or outage work โ€” permit-driven, schedule-driven, no room to slide
