What is a language services interpreter?

Language Services Interpreters are professionals who facilitate communication between people who speak different languages. They listen to spoken words in one language and orally translate them into another language, ensuring accurate and culturally sensitive communication. Interpreters work in various settings, such as hospitals, courts, schools, conferences, and government agencies. Their role is crucial in breaking down language barriers and ensuring information is conveyed clearly and accurately for all parties involved.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a language services interpreter?

To thrive as a Language Services Interpreter, you need advanced fluency in at least two languages, cultural competency, and often a degree or certification in interpretation. Familiarity with industry-specific terminology, interpretation technologies, and accreditation such as CCHI or ATA certification is typically required. Outstanding listening skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to remain impartial are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate, effective communication and foster trust between parties in medical, legal, or business settings.
