What is the difference between Language Data Scientist vs Natural Language Processing (NLP) Engineer?

AspectLanguage Data ScientistNLP Engineer
Required CredentialsDegree in Data Science, Computer Science, or related field; knowledge of linguistics beneficialDegree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; strong programming skills
Work EnvironmentData analysis, modeling, and research in tech or research firmsDeveloping and deploying NLP models in software or AI teams
Industry UsageTech companies, research institutions, language-focused startupsTech companies, AI firms, chatbot and voice assistant developers
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for their roles in language AI projectsRelated but more engineering-focused

While both roles work with language data, a Language Data Scientist primarily analyzes and models language data to extract insights, whereas an NLP Engineer focuses on developing and deploying NLP algorithms and systems. The roles often overlap but differ in their core focus—research and analysis versus engineering and implementation.

What is a language data scientist?

A language data scientist is a professional who analyzes and interprets large datasets related to human language, such as text and speech, to develop models for natural language processing (NLP) applications. They typically use skills in machine learning, linguistics, and programming languages like Python or R to improve language understanding systems. This role often involves working with tools like NLP libraries and requires knowledge of data cleaning, statistical analysis, and algorithm development.

  • Demonstrated success in using or (and preferably) developing machine learning models and data platforms in a production environment.
  • Training in deep learning approaches and natural language processing
  • Advanced proficiency with Python for data analysis
  • Must be fluent in either keras or tensorflow
  • Experience with large data sets (10 million+ rows)
  • Ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts
  • Experience working in an agile methodology

EDUCATION
Degree in a quantitative discipline such as Predictive Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, or Computer Science with coursework in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Natural Language Processing; Masters/PhD preferred. Ideally we would like to see someone that has been published in Natural Language Processing and Deep Neural Networks.
