Professionals in Language Access roles often encounter challenges such as managing the nuances of dialects, adapting to rapidly changing service requests, and ensuring accuracy under time pressure. They may also deal with emotionally charged or sensitive situations, especially when working in healthcare, legal, or emergency settings. Balancing multiple assignments and maintaining confidentiality are essential aspects of the role. Successfully overcoming these challenges requires flexibility, a strong commitment to accuracy, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
To thrive in a Language Access role, you need strong multilingual fluency, knowledge of interpreting and translation practices, and familiarity with legal or medical terminology if working in specialized settings. Proficiency with Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, remote interpreting platforms, and compliance with relevant certifications such as CCHI or ATA are typically important. Excellent interpersonal, cultural competency, and problem-solving skills help professionals navigate diverse client needs and complex communication situations. These skills ensure accurate, clear communication and equitable access to services for individuals with limited English proficiency.
A Language Access job involves ensuring that individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP) or those who are deaf or hard of hearing can access services and information in their preferred language. This can include roles like interpreters, translators, language access coordinators, and program managers. Professionals in this field work in healthcare, government, legal, and community service settings to provide language support and remove communication barriers. The goal is to promote inclusivity, compliance with language access laws, and equitable access to essential services.

DUTIES PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THE ALTERNATIVE PATHWAY FOR PART-TIME/EXEMPT EMPLOYEES. POR FAVOR HAGA CLIC AQUI PARA MAS INFORMACION SOBRE LA VIA ALTERNATIVA DE MEDIO TIEMPO/EXENTO The Alternative Pathway for Part-Time/Exempt Employees creates an opportunity for current part-time and exempt City employees to obtain regular, full-time employment with the City of Los Angeles. The program is divided into two phases: 6-12 months of on-the-job training (Trainee phase), followed by a 6-month probationary period (Assistant phase).
After successful completion of the probation period, the individual will then transition into the targeted civil service classification. Please note that the starting salary may vary; however the salary for the 'Trainee' and 'Assistant' classifications are generally equivalent to the salary for the Targeted, Civil Service classification. Salary placement will be calculated in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding and the Administrative Code.
REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S) Current employment with the City of Los Angeles; and 2,080 continuous work hours in a position that performs duties related to one of the targeted, civil service classifications. PROCESS NOTES: Employment with the City of Los Angeles must have begun on or before June 30, 2025. Applicants who are not employed in one of the targeted classifications must submit with their application a "Verification of Work Experience" (VWE) form with the required signatures, verifying their experience in a part-time and/or exempt position performing duties related to the specific pathway for which they are applying.
The VWE form should indicate the type of work performed and the amount of time spent performing such work. This form may be obtained on-line at https://personnel.lacity.gov/exams/vwe-sup.pdf . Please click here to see an example of how to properly complete the VWE form
Applicants may attach the completed VWE form to their on-line application at the time of filing, or will have seven (7) calendar days from the on-line submission date to email a copy of their completed VWE form, including the required signatures, to lalocalhire@lacity.org. The subject line of the applicant's email must include the classification title, their name and indicate it is a VWE. In the body of the email, they must also include their first and last name, last four digits of their Social Security Number and contact phone number
Applicants who fail to submit their signed VWE form within the time required will not be considered further in this examination and their applications will not be processed. Applicants who are employed in one of the targeted classifications must include their position title, dates of employment, and a description of their duties in the work experience section of the application. Applicants employed in one of the targeted classifications do not need to submit a VWE described in Note 2.
Applicants will only be eligible for hire into the career pathway in which they received training and successfully performed duties during their current part-time and/or exempt employment with the City of Los Angeles. Language access/interpreter services will be provided to applicants when requested. WHERE TO APPLY & APPLICATION DEADLINE Applications must be submitted online at www.governmentjobs.com/careers/lacity
Use the search bar to find the "Alternative Pathway for Part-Time/Exempt Employees" and click the green "Apply" button. APPLICATION DEADLINE Online applications will be accepted through MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2029. SELECTION PROCESS Applications that meet the minimum requirements will be referred to City departments based on hiring needs.
Departments will be able to use resume reviews, interviews, and any other job-related assessments to select hires, therefore the selection process for each position may vary. Please email lalocalhire@lacity.org if you have any questions. Language access and interpreter services are available upon request by emailing lalocalhire@lacity.org.
