Both Landscape Helper and Landscape Laborer roles involve outdoor work in landscaping settings. Both positions are essential in landscaping projects and share similar work environments and employer types.

What is a landscape helper?

Landscape helpers assist landscapers and groundskeepers with tasks such as planting, mowing, trimming, watering, and maintaining outdoor areas. They may also help with installing sod, spreading mulch, moving materials, and cleaning up job sites. This role typically involves physical labor outdoors and can be seasonal, depending on the region. Landscape helpers often work for landscaping companies, golf courses, or property maintenance firms.

What are some common challenges a landscape helper might face when starting out, and how can they be overcome?

New Landscape Helpers often encounter challenges such as adjusting to physically demanding work, learning to use various tools safely, and understanding plant care basics. To overcome these, it's helpful to ask questions, seek guidance from experienced team members, and take advantage of any on-the-job training offered. Staying hydrated, following safety protocols, and being open to feedback can also make the transition smoother and help you quickly become a valuable member of the landscaping team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape helper?

To thrive as a Landscape Helper, you generally need basic knowledge of landscaping techniques, physical stamina, and familiarity with gardening tools or equipment, often obtained through on-the-job training rather than formal education. Experience with power tools, lawnmowers, trimmers, and possibly pesticide application systems is typically required. Strong teamwork, reliability, and attention to detail help individuals stand out in this role. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality landscape maintenance that meets client expectations.

Job description

Description

Who We Are

Did you know that Ryan Lawn & Tree is a $100M+ professional Lawn & Landscape company? We've built one of the most respected lawn and tree care companies in the Midwest - and serve customers across Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. We're on a mission to raise the bar for our entire industry - attracting exceptional people, treating them right, and doing work that leaves a mark on every community we touch.

Love the Smell of Fresh-Cut Grass? Lead the Crew That Makes It Happen.

There's nothing quite like a perfectly manicured lawn - crisp lines, clean edges, and a property that stops people in their tracks. If that kind of craftsmanship gets you fired up, and you're ready to lead a team that delivers it every single day, Ryan Lawn & Tree wants to talk to you.

What You'll Do

  • Lead your crew. Manage a mowing crew of 1-3 people on a daily service route - setting the tone, setting the standard, and making sure every property looks its best.
  • Deliver exceptional service. Perform and oversee mowing, trimming, edging, blowing, weeding, pruning, leaf cleanups, bed cleanups, cutbacks, aeration, Verti cutting, power raking, and overseeding.
  • Own the client experience. Interact professionally with customers daily, communicating service expectations clearly and leaving every property - and every customer - in great shape.
  • Develop your team. Coach crew members to build their skills, efficiency, and knowledge so they grow right alongside you.
  • Equip your people. Ensure every crew member has the tools, training, and resources needed to meet the demands of the job.
  • Collaborate across departments. Communicate effectively with irrigation, turf, and forestry route managers to ensure every client's full property needs are met.
  • Keep learning. Continue developing your knowledge of all Ryan services and proactively make recommendations to customers when additional services would benefit their property.

Requirements

What You Bring

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 2+ years of mowing or landscape maintenance experience
  • Valid driver's license; ability to obtain DOT medical certification
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and push/pull objects while walking up to 3 miles per day
  • A thorough knowledge of mowing and landscape maintenance practices
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, customer-first attitude
  • The ability to lead, motivate, and hold a team accountable

** SAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION: This is a safety-sensitive position requiring the operation of vehicles and equipment. All candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen (including marijuana), criminal background check, MVR check, and DOT physical (where applicable) before starting employment. Candidates must meet all screening requirements as a condition of employment.

We hire great people for our employee-owned company. You will become a partner in the highest quality lawn and tree company in the Midwest. Why work at RYAN? In addition to being a non-smoking & EEOC company with advancement opportunities, other great benefits include:
