What is a landscape engineer?

Landscape Engineers are professionals who design, plan, and oversee the construction of outdoor spaces such as parks, gardens, campuses, and other green areas. They combine knowledge of engineering, environmental science, horticulture, and design to create functional, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. Their work often involves site analysis, grading, drainage, irrigation systems, and ensuring that projects comply with environmental and safety regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Landscape Engineer, you need expertise in landscape design, environmental engineering, and site planning, usually backed by a degree in landscape architecture, civil engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, GIS, and project management tools, as well as knowledge of sustainable practices and local regulations, is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help you collaborate effectively with clients, architects, and contractors. These competencies ensure the creation of functional, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor environments that meet both client needs and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by landscape engineers when working on large-scale projects?

Landscape Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders, managing project timelines, and addressing environmental regulations. Balancing client expectations with site limitations and sustainability requirements can be complex, especially on large-scale projects involving public spaces or infrastructure. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial, as unexpected site conditions or weather events may require quick problem-solving and design adjustments.

What is the difference between Landscape Engineer vs Landscape Architect?

AspectLandscape EngineerLandscape Architect
CredentialsEngineering degree, PE license often preferredLandscape architecture degree, licensure varies by region
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, engineering firms, urban planning projectsDesign studios, client meetings, outdoor site planning
Industry UsageInfrastructure projects, environmental remediation, civil engineeringPublic parks, residential and commercial landscape design

While both roles involve outdoor design and planning, Landscape Engineers focus on technical engineering aspects like drainage, grading, and infrastructure, often working on construction and environmental projects. Landscape Architects emphasize aesthetic design, spatial planning, and client consultation, creating functional and visually appealing outdoor spaces. Understanding these differences helps clients and employers identify the right professional for their project needs.

How much do landscape engineers make a year?

The average annual salary for landscape engineers is around $70,000 to $80,000, depending on experience, location, and level of certification. Entry-level positions typically start lower, while experienced professionals or those with specialized skills can earn higher wages. Salaries may also vary based on the complexity of projects and the size of the employing organization.

With our core values of Simplicity, Safety, Transparency, Humility, Attention to Detail, Autonomy and Growth guiding everything we do, we’re shaping the future of automation in dynamic markets.

As an AI Solutions Engineer III at ASI, you are responsible for leading discovery‑to‑adoption engagements across multiple departments, architecting knowledge‑capture and automation systems, and mentoring junior engineers. You define pilot scope, success metrics, and adoption plans, and serve as a senior technical authority on AI‑powered workflow and knowledge systems at ASI.

  • Architect and own the full capture, transcription, structuring, and edge‑case taxonomy pipeline for field knowledge systems.

  • Drive engineering‑workflow automation and communications‑triage programs from prototype through production handoff.

  • Produce engineering‑ready requirements documents and queryable knowledge bases consumed directly by engineering teams.

  • Mentor AI Solutions Engineers I and II on discovery methods, pipeline design, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Present pilot findings and adoption results to department leads and engineering leadership.

  • Evaluate and integrate speech‑to‑text, large language model (LLM), and data‑structuring tooling into production pipelines.

  • Build fully automated AI autonomous systems for all operations.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software development experience with fluency in modern AI development tools.

  • Proven track record delivering automation or knowledge‑capture systems from discovery through production.

  • Experience building capture, transcription, and structuring pipelines using speech‑to‑text, large language models (LLMs), or similar tooling.

  • Ability to lead discovery engagements and adoption planning with engineering and operations stakeholders.

  • Experience producing engineering‑ready requirements from unstructured field knowledge.

  • Active mentorship of junior engineers in a professional setting.

  • Experience building AI automation workflows.

  • Experience building vector databases.

  • Experience with Obsidian or similar knowledge‑management systems.

  • Experience building AI voice systems is a plus.

  • Experience with OpenClaw is a plus.
