What is landscape design?

Landscape design is the art and practice of planning and arranging outdoor spaces such as gardens, parks, and yards to achieve aesthetic, functional, and environmental goals. It involves selecting and organizing plants, hardscapes, water features, and other elements to create harmonious and sustainable environments. Landscape designers consider factors like climate, soil, site conditions, and client preferences to develop practical and visually pleasing layouts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape designer?

To thrive as a Landscape Designer, you need a solid foundation in horticulture, site planning, and design principles, often supported by a degree in landscape architecture or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software, GIS mapping tools, and graphic design programs is typically required, along with knowledge of local environmental regulations. Creativity, strong communication, and project management skills set outstanding designers apart, enabling effective collaboration and client satisfaction. These skills are crucial for producing functional, sustainable, and visually appealing outdoor spaces that meet both client needs and ecological considerations.

What are some common challenges faced by landscape designers when working on client projects?

Landscape designers often encounter challenges such as balancing client expectations with site limitations, adhering to local regulations, and ensuring sustainable practices. Managing project timelines and coordinating with contractors, architects, and horticulturists are also key aspects that require strong communication and organizational skills. Adapting designs to changing budgets or environmental conditions is common, so flexibility and creative problem-solving are essential in this role.

Job description

Sell Luxury. Design Dreams. Deliver Backyard Resort Living®.

Alderwood Landscaping, the Pacific Northwest's premier design-build landscape architecture firm, is seeking a top-performing Design/Sales Specialist to join our Bellevue team. For over 30 years, we've been blessed to help homeowners transform their properties through our award-winning design/build process—creating stunning, resort-style outdoor living environments that make the neighbors suddenly very interested in weekend BBQ invitations (and conveniently available for morning coffee chats over the fence).
This is a unique opportunity for a high-level sales professional who thrives in a landscape design-oriented, client-focused environment. If you're passionate about high-end Backyard Resort Living® and have a proven ability to close large projects, this role is for you.
Why Alderwood?
Alderwood Landscaping is the region's leading luxury landscape architecture and construction firm, with offices across Washington and Idaho. We specialize in creating fully custom outdoor living environments that combine beauty, function, and craftsmanship. Our reputation for excellence is built on three decades of stunning results, satisfied clients, and God's beautiful raw materials transformed into something extraordinary.

What You'll Do:
  • Meet with pre-qualified homeowner leads (the fun part: they're already dreaming big and ready to invest in happiness).
  • Sell Alderwood's signature Backyard Resort Living® projects ranging from $75K–$500K+.
  • Guide clients from initial consultation through final contract.
  • Use our CRM to manage your pipeline, appointments, and communications.
  • Collaborate with in-house designers and project managers who speak fluent "outdoor living" (and won't roll their eyes when clients ask for "something Pinterest-y").
  • Deliver a seamless, luxury sales experience.

What You Bring:
  • Proven success in landscape design & construction sales.
  • Proven track record of closing $2M+ in annual sales preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills (ability to get people genuinely excited about outdoor living).
  • Self-motivated, organized, and tech-savvy.
  • Client-first attitude and polished communication.
  • Valid driver's license (company vehicle provided—because rolling up in a luxury ride doesn't hurt when selling luxury landscapes).
  • Having a Landscape Architecture license is a huge plus.

What We Offer:
  • Base salary + commissions ($75,000–$200,000+ DOE).
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid vacation and holidays.
  • Company vehicle.
  • Relocation assistance for highly qualified candidates.
  • A team-first, growth-focused company culture where we believe work should be fulfilling.
  • The opportunity to sell award-winning Backyard Resort Living® projects that families will enjoy for generations.

The best part?
You'll go home each day knowing you helped create the backdrops for graduation parties, wedding proposals, Sunday morning coffee rituals, children taking their first steps on custom patios, backyard soccer practice sessions, birthday party celebrations, and those perfect summer evenings that families will talk about for decades.
How to Apply:
To apply, please send your resume and a brief cover letter to: Nicole Aguado – HR Manager, nicole@alderwoodlandscaping.com

We're looking for someone who shares our passion for excellence and believes that great outdoor spaces bring people together. If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you!
