Landfill Manager information

What does a landfill manager do?

A Landfill Manager oversees the daily operations of a landfill site, ensuring that waste is disposed of safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental regulations. Their responsibilities include supervising staff, monitoring waste delivery and compaction, maintaining equipment, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. They also manage environmental monitoring activities, such as checking for groundwater contamination and controlling landfill gas emissions. Additionally, Landfill Managers often interact with regulatory agencies and help plan for future site development or closure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landfill manager?

To thrive as a Landfill Manager, you need a background in environmental science, engineering, or waste management, often supported by relevant degrees and experience in regulatory compliance. Familiarity with landfill management systems, GPS-based tracking, heavy equipment operation, and certifications such as SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help in managing staff, coordinating with regulators, and addressing community concerns. These competencies ensure efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible landfill operations that comply with legal standards.

What are some common challenges a landfill manager faces in balancing environmental regulations with daily operations?

Landfill Managers often face the challenge of ensuring that day-to-day operations comply with evolving environmental regulations while maintaining efficiency and safety. This involves monitoring waste streams, overseeing leachate and gas management systems, and ensuring proper documentation and reporting. Managers must also coordinate with regulatory agencies during inspections and implement corrective actions swiftly if issues arise. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and up-to-date knowledge of industry standards.

Job description

Mill is a waste prevention technology company reimagining what it means to eliminate waste, starting with food. We build smart systems and infrastructure for homes, businesses, and municipalities that transform food scraps from landfill-bound waste into valuable resources, including chicken feed. Tens of thousands of Mill's residential food recyclers are already helping households divert millions of pounds of food scraps every year, paving the way for our upcoming launch of Mill Commercial—the industry's first end-to-end solution for managing, understanding, and preventing food waste in commercial environments (e.g. grocery, restaurants, food services). At Mill, we are passionate about building easy-to-use, beautifully designed technologies that keep food in the food system and out of landfills.

About the Role

We're seeking a Product Manager for our Consumer Platform team who will drive the performance of our e-commerce technology stack. • Own the product vision for our customer account system, including authentication, personalization, and preference management across consumer and commercial business
  • Design and implement new customer onboarding and account management needs for new distribution channels, including digital and brick-and-mortar retailers
  • Serve as the primary liaison between technology teams and internal stakeholders including Order Management, Inventory, Fulfillment, Finance, Accounting, and Customer Service
  • Develop integration strategies to ensure seamless data flow between customer-facing applications and backend systems
  • Design and build the technical architecture that enables complex product bundling, dynamic pricing, and flexible promotion strategies across product categories for subscriptions and purchases
  • Champion platform improvements that reduce technical debt while enhancing conversion, retention, and operational efficiency
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive platform roadmap aligned with business objectives and stakeholder needs

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of product management experience in e-commerce platforms or retail technology
  • Demonstrated experience optimizing e-commerce, accounting, and payment platforms (e.g., Shopify, Stripe, NetSuite, custom solutions)
  • Strong understanding of account systems, identity management, and customer data platforms

  • Proven ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with ability to balance competing priorities
  • Technical background sufficient to collaborate effectively with engineering and data teams
  • Proven track record of effectively managing engineering teams using Agile methodologies, including creating and maintaining JIRA boards, sprint planning, and fostering a motivated, high-performing team culture
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related field (or equivalent experience)

Ideal Candidate

  • Has successfully managed customer backend accounts and e-commerce platforms
  • Understands payment processing, fraud prevention, and security considerations for e-commerce
  • Has experience working closely with finance and accounting teams to align on backend product requirements
  • Experience implementing and optimizing microservices architecture for platform flexibility
  • Knowledge of API design patterns and experience with headless commerce architectures

A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs. At Mill, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
