What are land rigs?
What Are Land Rig Jobs?
A land rig is a drilling rig used to drill holes onshore rather than offshore and requires a crew to function. The size and function of the rig determine the positions available, but typically there are six people in the crew: rig manager, derrickhand, leasehand, motorhand, driller, and floorhand. Your duties and responsibilities in any of these careers involve cleaning, maintaining, and operating the rig. Drills operate 24 hours a day, so multiple crew members rotate to fill 12-hour shifts. There are additional land rig positions, including truck drivers to transfer material to various locations, managers to oversee production, and oil and gas support staff.
What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on a land rig, and how can they be addressed?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Land Rig Operator, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Land Rig vs Drilling Engineer?
| Aspect | Land Rig | Drilling Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Operates and maintains drilling equipment on land rigs | Designs and plans drilling operations, oversees drilling processes |
| Required Credentials | Technical certifications, experience with rig equipment | Engineering degree, specialized drilling certifications |
| Work Environment | On-site at drilling locations, field-based | Office-based with site visits, technical planning |
| Industry Usage | Commonly employed in onshore oil and gas drilling | Involved in planning and execution of drilling projects |
While both roles are integral to drilling operations, a Land Rig operator focuses on operating and maintaining the drilling equipment on-site, whereas a Drilling Engineer is responsible for designing and managing the drilling process. The roles often collaborate closely but require different skill sets and certifications.

Job description
Purpose and Scope
The Safety, Performance and Leadership Coach position (hereafter simply referred to as Coach) at CAVU International plays the key role in delivering our clients the world's best consulting services for high- hazard work environments where the consequences of human failure are unacceptable. The Coach is embedded on site with the client's crew to deliver the coaching and mentoring necessary to improve team behaviors and organizational culture. He/she uses the client's tools and programs to define their "Perfect Day" and focuses their team on these targets based on their organization's strengths and opportunities for improvement. The Coach then develops a deliberate approach to making the perfect day repeatable throughout their organization.
In the execution of his/her roles and responsibilities, the Coach routinely serves as the face of the Company on "hitch" (work period/event of various durations at a specific client on/off-shore rig or facility) with the customer - often with little to no supervision. As such, the position requires an extremely self- motivated individual who is dedicated to doing whatever it takes to perform the mission with excellence even in the face of long hours and austere environments.

- Facilitate rig/facility Culture Surveys to assess the current safety climate within the organization.
- Facilitate Leadership Round Table discussions to address management of change, risk mitigation, leadership principles and CRM topics.
- Provide relevant feedback to platform/facility leadership on Continuous Improvement strategy.
- Provide executive level after-action reviews/reports at client request or as regularly scheduled.
- Demonstrate proper planning, briefing and debriefing techniques.
- Develop training materials, presentations and reports.
- Provide translation services as required.
- Assist CEO, CSO, VP Operations and Marketing Manager with recommendations for Continuous Improvement of CAVU products and services.
