What is a land development internship?

A Land Development Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in the process of transforming raw land into usable property for residential, commercial, or industrial purposes. Interns typically work with civil engineers, planners, and project managers to learn about site analysis, permitting, design, and construction phases. Responsibilities may include assisting with research, preparing reports, site visits, and supporting project documentation. The internship provides valuable exposure to the real estate and construction industries, helping interns build relevant skills and industry connections.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a land development internship?

As a Land Development Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of projects such as site planning, feasibility studies, and assisting with environmental impact assessments. You'll often support experienced engineers and planners by helping to prepare site layouts, reviewing zoning regulations, and conducting field visits to gather data. Interns typically collaborate closely with civil engineers, surveyors, and municipal officials, gaining exposure to the entire land development process from concept to permitting. This hands-on experience offers valuable insight into both the technical and regulatory aspects of land development, positioning you well for future roles in the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a land development intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Land Development Intern, you need a solid understanding of civil engineering principles, land use regulations, and basic project management, often supported by progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS software, and Microsoft Office is typically required, and internships may seek candidates with experience in surveying or environmental analysis. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and manage evolving project requirements. These skills ensure interns can contribute to site assessments, design solutions, and support the successful delivery of development projects.

Job description

We are looking for motivated Civil Engineering students who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in land and/or site development engineering.

Our summer internship program is designed to give interns exposure to the full life cycle of a land development project, from initial planning and site evaluation through design, permitting, and construction. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to real projects, develop practical engineering and Civil 3D design skills, and gain a broader understanding of how civil land development projects come together.

Throughout the summer, interns will rotate through multiple departments and work alongside engineers, designers, project managers, and other team members. This provides exposure to the different disciplines involved in land development while allowing interns to build relationships throughout the company.

Our goal is for you to leave the internship with stronger technical skills, a better understanding of the civil engineering profession, and meaningful experience that prepares you for your future career. We want you to learn, ask questions, take on real responsibilities, and develop your engineering skills in a fun, collaborative, and encouraging environment.

What You’ll Experience
  • Work on active residential and commercial land development projects
  • Assist with civil engineering design and plan preparation using Civil 3D
  • Gain exposure to multiple phases of the project life cycle

  • Work alongside experienced engineers, EITs, CAD designers, and project managers
  • Rotate through related departments to gain a broader understanding of civil engineering
  • Participate in project discussions, coordination, and problem-solving
  • Receive guidance, feedback, and mentorship from experienced team members
Educational Requirements
  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS degree in Civil Engineering
  • Interest in land development and civil engineering design
  • Previous Civil 3D or AutoCAD experience is helpful but not required
